Accommodations in Interlaken, Switzerland

I would appreciate any sugegstions made towards our stay (4 family members) in Interlaken during the month of July. We have not figured out how long we are staying so apartments/hotels will be our choice.

Thanks
Atul

Hi. I stayed in Interlaken with my boys last August. We stayed at Backpackers Villa. (They have a website, just do a wood search to find it.) It's in the center of town and is extremely clean and comfortable. And the rates are very reasonable. We had a 4 bedded room overlooking the Jungfrau with a balcony for about $80.00 us dollars a night, with a continental breakfast included. There's internet access, etc. Also, check out the website www.alpinraft.ch for things to do. Have a great trip, I'll be there again on Sept. 7th....we loved it so much!

Try www.schwizi.ch It is a lovely group of chalet vacation apartments in a village just outside of Interlaken. Looks fantastic! We're looking forward to staying there on an upcoming family trip, and the owners have been wonderful to deal with.

We stayed at Hotel Weisses Kruez several years ago and enjoyed it. It is on the Interlaken home page. Several have mentioned staying in Lauterbrennan or other outlying cities rather than Interlaken but I loved the city and the Bucherer jewelry store--great watches & clocks and excellent service both in store and by mail!!

Interlaken's a great choice . . . very central to all kinds of activities. I always stay at the Landhotel Golf, a 3-minute drive outside of town. This may be the newest hotel in the area. It's chalet style, all balconies with mountain views, very nice rooms, wonderful staff, and excellent food. It's in the country and very quiet. You will hear the cowbells. Interlaken is great for shopping, and the people are very friendly. Be sure to do the steamboat rides on the lakes. And for a really different and fun day, rent bikes and take them on the train to Grindelwald. Then ride DOWN all the way back to Interlaken on the bike trail! Incredible ride. Take the side trip to Lauterbrunnen (also via trail) on the way down and see the waterfall inside the mountain. Take lotsa film and wear your helmets!

If you want to stay higher in the mountains, try the Hotel Blumlisalp, 5 minutes above Grindelwald. Maybe the best 1-star hotel in the world. Wonderful rooms with blonde wood and circular showers. Outstanding food. And the views from the front rooms (101 and 102 are the biggest & have huge balconies) cannot be beat. The mountains are right in your face. Glaciers, roaring streams, cowbells . . . it's all there. It's 5 minutes by car above the village and very quiet. No elevator or room phones, and TV is optional (thus the 1 star), but I never miss them. Get a special pass and do ALL the cog trains, gondolas, etc. in the area. Have lunch outdoors at Kleine Scheidegg, looking straight up at the Eiger and the Jungfrau, then hike DOWN 9 miles back to Grindelwald, right past the north face of the Eiger. This is one GREAT hike that you won't forget.

Enjoy your trip!

One question I have is in reference to getting around near Interlaken. How do you get to farther hotels and in general for shopping or boat rides etc? How about into Interlaken itself? Is train a convenient option?

Thanks
Atul
