Ever tried the stuff? Me?
I'm a kir royale kind of girl . . . *no.* But then again I don't drink blue curacao or any weird-colored cocktails!

The Paris Oberkampf & Bastlle trendies are into it too:

http://www.paristempo.com/absinthe.html
http://www.paristempo.com/UANbars2.html

Apparently it's a nice aperitif - but not my scene =)
HTH!
Ah, I know I'll regret this:

Once upon a time there was a man with a very hearty appetite and who was a regular absinthe imbiber. He had a terrible intestinal gas problem, frequent and extremely noisy. He finally went to the doctor who asked him to describe the noise. "HONDA!!" said the man, "It sounds just like 'HO-O-O-NDA'." The doctor queried him closely about his eating habits. When the man finally revealed his love of absinthe, the doctor cried, "Well, there's the problem! Don't you know that absinthe makes the fart go "HONDA"?

forgive me

In the Haute Alpes we bought a couple of the tiny souvenir bottles of Genepi, the very strong alcoholic product of that area, and I think there was wormwood in it; could that be possible? They serve it as a digestiv there; when I asked what it was made from, they said ,"From alpine flowers." They even have genepi flavored ice cream, etc.

Absinthe used to be made from wormwood which gave it its hallucinognic properties.

It used to be, around the latter part of the 19th and early 20th centuries the drug (drink) of choice for a number of folks, and it was particularly popular in Provence.

It is rumored that van Gogh cut his ear after drinking Absinthe over a long weekend and arguing with Gaugin.

The current stuff does not have the wormwood properties...but it is still nasty stuff!

US

I tried absinthe in Prague. It has a nice herbal flavor - not unpleasent. Did the "sugar in the spoon soaked in absinthe then lit" routine. Had a couple glasses, didn't get drunk - didn't see the green fairy - had a twinge of a headache the next morning. I agree that it's more hype than true hallucinogenic.

The online instructions say to drink one part Absinthe to 4 parts water, plus that sugar. Well, we wanted to get to the hallucinating fast so we had one part water to one part Absinthe, + sugar. Nuthin. It was more of a novelty drink, to me, and I thought it was overrated!

Absinthe is indeed available in London. In fact, they sell at least two brands at Waitrose markets. And they both include wormwood.
