Itinerary almost complete
Capestrano or Navelli might be nice options to base yourselves in, if you want to see both Gran Sasso and Sulmona and be based in one spot. Santo Stefano, in my view, is more a place to walk around a bit, but there is not a lot there - at least in 2018 they were still doing a lot of construction, and it's quite small.

Pettorano sul Gizio has been awarded the title "Borghi pił belli d'Italia", which is an association of small towns that meet certain criteria to be admitted to the title. There are 24 other towns in Abruzzo who have been awarded this distinction. You can see them all here:

The criteria for admission are not just about beauty. They have to have a tourist office, hotels or equivalent structures, restaurants, at least some pedestrian-only streets, and at least some special events of touristic interest. A town has to apply for admission and be evaluated. I live in a town that's one of the first to be a member of this association, and it once was voted the second best in Italy, However, there are some other towns near me that are in the association, which meed all the criteria but that I wouldn't call beautiful.
Scanno is also on the list in Abruzzo. It really is a cute town, and some people still wear a version of the traditional costume. Someone in a nearby town told us that people were paid to do so, and I think it''s quite likely. There's nothing wrong with that, I suppose, but we were a little disillusioned, even if I couldn't see why on earth people in just this one town would dress like that.
