Itinerary almost complete

I decided to stay in Sulmona for 3 nights as our base. We will do a full day trip to Campo Imperatore and perhaps fit in another village on the return to Sulmona, probably S.S. di Sessanio. I thought we could go to Scanno and Lago di Scanno the other full day. I watched a video on the "Top 10 Places You should Visit in Abruzzo." (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...agez_axYEgCrnv). More to confuse me! Pettorano sul Gizio (15 mins from Sulmona) is supposed to be "one of most beautiful villages in Italy." - I bet they say that about all the villages lol. Anyway, the fellow in the video warned not to try and do too much as the traffic on the one lane roads can be pretty bad. He did say to take SS17 rather than SS17bis, but I don't see how you avoid it if you prefer to do a loop rather than backtrack. Decisions, decisions!

Pettorano sul Gizio has been awarded the title "Borghi pił belli d'Italia", which is an association of small towns that meet certain criteria to be admitted to the title. There are 24 other towns in Abruzzo who have been awarded this distinction. You can see them all here:

https://borghipiubelliditalia.it/abruzzo/

The criteria for admission are not just about beauty. They have to have a tourist office, hotels or equivalent structures, restaurants, at least some pedestrian-only streets, and at least some special events of touristic interest. A town has to apply for admission and be evaluated. I live in a town that's one of the first to be a member of this association, and it once was voted the second best in Italy, However, there are some other towns near me that are in the association, which meed all the criteria but that I wouldn't call beautiful.

Scanno is also on the list in Abruzzo. It really is a cute town, and some people still wear a version of the traditional costume. Someone in a nearby town told us that people were paid to do so, and I think it''s quite likely. There's nothing wrong with that, I suppose, but we were a little disillusioned, even if I couldn't see why on earth people in just this one town would dress like that.
