A simple question about the euro coins

A simple question about the euro coins, I know what countries “honor” the euro, but as to the coin itself, doesn’t each country have it’s own design, similar to how the U.S. has been minting quarters with logos representing each individual state? Is that so, or are the coins uniform from nation to nation?

The front of the coins is a uniform design throughout the European Union. Each country get to design the back of the coins in a way that reflects their own national identity. For example the back of the Euro coins minted in Ireland have a harp on them, the same as the old pre Euro Irish coins did.

Yes, each country has its own design. No, the coins aren't uniform from country to country, although, of course, every country in the euro zone will accept euro coins from any other country in the zone. The reverse side of the coins are the same throughout the eurozone.
Some of the designs are quite striking. I like especially the coins from Austria, Finland and Greece. Of course, I haven't been able to get my hands on any euro coins from the Vatican, Monaco or San Marino. I look forward to seeing what the Slovenians will do (I know already they're planning to put Lippizaners on at least one of their coins.).
Belgium put out the most boring coins, all with the same unappealing profile of the king. No offense meant to any Belgians, but some people I know refer to them as the "fathead" euros. http://www.eurocoins.co.uk/belgium.htmlAlthough I think they've started changing the design.

This is a fun site for looking at all the coins:

I read that there is actually a booming activity in counterfeiting the Euro coins - i find this hard to believe. Anyone confirm or debunk this?
