Just some nitpicks on david's post :

Charlemagne kingdom included not merely "much" but all modern France plus modern Belgium and Netherlands, western Germany, Switzerland, a bit of Northern Spain and northern Italy (in other words all of christian Europe at this time except Great Britain and southern Italy...which helps understanding why he could have been perceived as a new roman emperor). Interested people can look at political map of Europe in 800 at :

http://www.euratlas.com/grand/gr0800.htm

Actually, the site www.euratlas.com provides a map of Europe at the beginning of each century, from 1 AD to 1700, which is great for people interested in european history.

The Franks capital wasn't in Aachen. Only Charlemagne's capital was. There were three or four frank kingdoms, sometimes united, sometimes separated, the "capital" could switch from one town to another inside the same kingdom. Actually the capital was whatever place the king happened to live in during a given period. Usually, these "capitals" were situated in eastern France. I don't think Aachen has been a capital at any other time except under Charlemagne's reign.

Is this the same "xxx" who constantly gives his/her views on world politics?
I always found him/her belligerent and conceited, but read the post anyway. Now at least we know it his not his/her views only, it's his/her nature. Dangerous individual.
Give me one clairobscur, one Rex, and yes one Uncle Sam anyday over a hundred xxx's.
"The first step to knowledge is to know that we are ignorant". Richard Cecil
"We know accurately only when we know little; with knowledge doubt increases." Goethe
"He who has no inclination to learn more will be very apt to think he knows enough." Powell
"The more you know, the more you know that you know nothing" My granddad

But I guess you knew that already, xxx?
Hope your 3 kids won't take after you. The last thing we need in this world is more "know-it-alls" who consider a good score on Jeopardy an achievement, but don't have a clue about social behavior.

Just inside the door of St. Peters, there's a red circle on the floor where the Pope crowned Charlemagne as the Holy Roman Emperor. Preseved from the original church that sttod on the spot.

Author: xxx ([email protected])
Date: 04/26/2002, 11:13 pm
Message: So, Uncle Sam comes clean as the ignorant rube he really is. You really never heard of Charlemagne, US? Unbelievable!! Do you read? Ever been to Aachen? Ever heard of "Civilization," by Kenneth Clark? MAN, are you clueless! Did you fail European history, or just never take it? And people wonder why Europeans think we Americans have such a limited world view and are so woefully uneducated. It's SUCH a shame..........

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

XXX,

I realize that you and I do not agree on much, however in the future please use your brain.

I, Uncle Sam did not post this message.

One of my hobbies happens to be studying and reading about medieval history. Of course I know who Charlemagne was, you .....!

I am currently reading "A History of the Middle Ages" by Joseph Dahmus, written in 1968 and republished in 1995.

I would suggest in the future, that even though folks may not agree, you take just a bit of time to THINK FIRST before you hastily and angrily jump someone!!!!!

The real Uncle Sam!

Uncle Sam:
I suspected it from the start, but am now convinced that xxx posted the Uncle Sam question him/herself, just so he/she could trash you down the road.
I used the term "belligerent" earlier. A most fitting description.

I shouldn't add anything further to this thread, but since xxx has been unmasked to be the idiot we all suspect, let me clarify that I didn't say "so what" about the coronation site of Charlemagne - - as in its unimpressive to see this piece of history. I mean "so what" about me -- or anyone else who goes to any one place or knows any one fact - - it doesn't make me or any particular individual smarter or more cultured or more educated or worldlier. It's the aggregate of what/who/where you know/visit/think about. No one answer to a "Jeopardy" question makes a difference in who you are or what anyone ought to think about you.
isn't Aachen also Aix-la-Chappelle?

which likely ties into why Karl der Grosse, (from Aachen) is also known as Charlemagne (from Aix-la-Chappelle).

and, this should start another whole discussion on how to pronounce Aix!
<BR

HRH

Just one addition to Clairobscur's comments: Greece was also part of Christian Europe in 800. Charlemagne was only the Western Roman Emperor; there was also an Eastern Roman Emperor, and had been all along.

In the year 800, it was actually an empress, Irene. She had deposed (and blinded) her son the emperor in 797, and she was deposed and sent into exile in 802.

TO Clairobscur

I only mentioned France as part of the Frankish empire because that was the focus of the original few postings. I agree with you that most of "western" Europe was part of his kingdom. Frankish power also extended into central Europe at that time.

It is also true that Aachen was "his" capital and that various other kings had other capitals but again the original posts were focusing on Charlemagne alone.

His kingdom was howevere, unitary and there were no other Frankish Kingdoms at that time. Subsequent to his death the kingdom was broken into 3 parts for his sons as was the Franks custom.

The eastern portion eventually became Germany, the central Burgundy and the western France in later times.

I love Americans that are embarrassed by the rest of us. xxx - "And people wonder why Europeans think we Americans have such a limited world view and are so woefully uneducated. It's SUCH a shame.........." If Euros really think that (which I don't believe) I say, let them think whatever they want. Who cares. I'm sure they won't mind our limited world view and how "woefully undereducated" we are the next time they need their asses bailed out of another world war. As for Uncle Sam and Charlemagne, I'd rather sit on my front porch, share a 6 pack of Budweiser and talk about our lawns than hang out with xxx and have him/her tell me about how smart he/she is, anytime. Go away.
