A question regarding Mont-Saint Michel
It might be a silly question...
We read that some parking areas in MSM are closed at certain times as a result of flooding, except for special areas reserved for hotel guests inside MSM.
We booked a night in mid October in Relais Saint Michel hotel which is just outside MSM.
My question is whether something will prevent us to take our car to MSM that evening , doing a nice evening walk in the less busy hours and return safely to our hotel afterwards...

The causeway (roadway) that leads to MSM is elevated higher than the adjoining parking area, thus the latter may be subject to a high tide.
The walk to MSM via the causeway is a beautiful one as you approach the Mont itself and that's what you should do anyway, i.e. you won't need the car.

The causeway road and footpath rarely if every flood over anymore due to silting in of the bay. Some lower parking areas do but these are clearly posted. You should have no problem driving there except in the rare flooding around full moons and then in most unusual conditions. The French government is trying to remedy the bay silting problem so that the mount once again becomes an island at high tide but has met resistance from local businessment afraid it will affect tourists' easy ability to drive right up to the mount. Plans would abolish public access by the causeway and substitute some kind of shuttle service. Anyway it's only about a mile from the cluster of hotels on the mainland you're staying at to the mount.

We were just there and noticed that the paved road going to the parking lot and the paved parking area (not the bus parking area--it did flood a little) did not flood. There were campers out on a spit a land from the parking area and they had to move. As it was mentioned, it's well posted. There's even a warning siren when the tide is coming in. Be aware that the abbey closes early this time of the year. We arrived too late to see it and it opened at 9 a.m. when we were departing at 9:30 a.m. so we only got to walk around it. M.
