A night on Hydra...what to do?

We suddenly have an extra 2 days in Greece, when we honeymooned many years ago we spent a lovely day in Hydra and we thought we might take the kids there.Ferry from Piraeus overnight and then late ferry back to Piraeus...but is it a spot with "other" things to do other than absorb the Greek Lifestyle ?? By the way what was the name of the old movie that I think had Sophia Loren in it based in Hydra looking for a sunken statue ??

Can anyone tell us if Hydra is trampled, or if (please God) it is a possible quiet place to stay? Thanks, J.

It is indeed one of the few remaining quiet places in Europe!
No cars, only donkeys, even the music at the local bars 'respects' the setting and the history of this island.
Hire a seataxi an you will have a small private beach,of your choice, for yourself(bring a picnic).

I overnighted once on a sailboat on Hydra. There is a lovely little hotel with a pool about a block from the harbor. Sorry, I don't remember it's name. You can take donkeys to climb the mountain, or hike. Also, there are restaurants along the coast that will get you out of the main harbor. Beautiful sunsets!

The movie was called Boy on a Dolphin and starred Alan Ladd and Sophia Loren, with a great theme tune. The maritime museum is a must see and the staff know all about this film also.
There are a number of interesting strolls, along the sea front or to other villages. When are you going? It is very quiet at this time of year.
I stayed at Innkompass which was really nice, no views of the sea but a pleasant courtyard with outdoor dining.

Hi Marko
One of the best months for being in Greece, also may and september, not too busy and not too hot.
Have great time.

Hi Marko--

Hydra is our favorite place and we always end our trips to Greece with 2-3 days in Hydra. Hiking around the island, boat rides around the island & maybe a donkey ride, is about all I can think of that the kids might enjoy. It's pretty much "Greek style absorbtion" island for adults.

Check out Botsis Pension, close to the harbor. They have an apartment for 4 under $100, with balcony; town & harbor view. It's kind of funky; think the kids would love it & it has been upgraded recently. It's the only place we ever stay on Hydra. He has a nice Web page now, Botsis Pension, Hdra, Greece. You can e-mail Nikos for info, but I would do it soon, cause last year when we tried to book for May we didn't hear from him for quite awhile, when he finally contacted us he was vacationing in Florida I think he should still be on Hydra till the end of October. Have a great trip.
