A Good Base in Corsica

We are considering including Corsica in our holiday
this year. We normally like to have a base where we
rent accommodations and take day trips and have a
little cottage to come back to.
Are there any suggestions for a base?
Somewhere easy to get in and out of, where we don't
feel isolated and at the same time not too congested.
Also, is May a good time of year there for nice weather?

Thank you all for the many wonderful and valuable suggestions
over the years........Justine

Hi Justine,

We've been to Corsica and are heading there again later this year. May should be absolutely excellent weather-wise. Not overly hot like the summer and not overrun with tourists like the summer. By the end of May, you should be able to swim quite comfortably, even early May if you don't need 25 degree water temps !

As for where to base, the one tricky thing about Corsica is that driving around takes lots of time. Even if the distances aren't long, the roads can be quite windy and you need to take your time and go slowly. That's not such a bad thing, since the scenery is so gorgeous, but it does limit you to what is feasible for a day trip from any one location.

Personally, I love the coast north of Ajaccio. I think it is the prettiest part of the island and long stretches of it are blissfully undeveloped. We've stayed in the small seaside village of Tiuccia and found it ideal (we are heading back there again for another week). Aside from easy access to Ajaccio, itself, there are some lovely little seaside villages close by further north (Cargese, Piana) plus the "Calanches" seaside cliffs, which are as spectacular as any you'll ever see. Inland, there are some very nice villages a bit lost in time.

If you want more info, just let me know.

Hi Kevin, Thank you for all this good help. I am attracted to the Ajaccio area as well. I would prefer to stay on the coast but I hear that the village of Bastelica is a lovely spot. I will do a little more research and get back to you with more enquiries.
I am open to any suggestions at this point.
