A day trip from London

I will be in London for a week in April. I would like to take a short day trip. I have previously visited Kent, Windsor, Stonehenge, Cambridge, Oxford and Bath. Any other ideas?

Have you done the regular day trips like Hampton Court or Greenwich? What about Brighton or Rye? Normally the Cotswolds don't make a good day trip, but London Walks has an Explorer's Day to the Cotswolds that people like. How about just going to Blenheim? It might help if you knew whether you had a particular interest.

I have been to most of those places, but Rye is a brand new idea for me. I enjoy visiting churches, markets and green spaces. I am a walker and I like best being in those places where I can enjoy the town without having to do buses, etc. Thanks for a great idea.

It will be nice. And you will find more than enough to do in a day.

It is one of my favorite cities and I very rarely see it mentioned by others for daytrips. It is compact so everything is within walking distance. April should be a great time to walk along the River Itchen and view the gardens on the other side.

I am trying one with Evan Evans: The Lake District In a Day. We leave early; get back 21:00 hours.
It might be a stretch, but we thought we would try it.
I will let you know how it was after I do it in late June.

That does sound like a stretch, Bob. We spent several days in that area a few years ago. Very beautiful.

There are many lovely areas just outside London where you can take walking trails or ride bikes.

We visited a couple of old manor homes that were owned by my family before some of them came to the colonies. The gardens were lovely and we had a great day.

Have you been to Stratford upon Avon? You might be able to take a boat trip up the Thames, too.

Have a nice day.

For your combination of interests, I would recommend a trip to Salisbury on market day.

I was going to suggest Salisbury too. Great cathedral, the outdoor market is fun, and it's a cute little town.

A question for The-Editor and kaudrey.
I've been to both Salisbury and Winchester more than once, what is the attraction of Salisbury over Winchester?

I haven't been to Winchester, so I wasn't recommending Salisbury *over* it, just over the other places I've been to personally!

Thank you all! I have been to Salisbury and it is lovely. I enjoyed it immensely. It is looking like a day in Winchester will be just the thing for this trip for me. I love the great variety of suggestions this post elicted. I appreciate it.

Why not hop on a train to York? Much nicer than Winchester.

Only takes 2.5 hours by train from Kings Cross, and they are MUCH friendlier up north

Enjoy whatever you decide to do!

Thanks for the suggestion, Glitterball. I have visited York several times. I think it deserves a longer stay than I have in mind for this trip.
