9th Arridisamont, any recommendations?

Michael, it depends a lot in what part of the 9th your hotel is located. <BR><BR>I'd say the southern part is ok, around the large department stores Galeries Lafayette and Printemps (very busy during daytime). It's also where the Opera de Paris is located. Basically busy, safe, but not all that great in the evenings, especially, if you're looking for nice bistrots and other entertainment.<BR><BR>I'd definitely avoid the northern part around Place Clichy and Pigalle. <BR><BR>Again, all depends on the exact location of your hotel.

The Scribe is probably the most expensive; it looks very nice and is close to the Opera House. Others in the 9th arrondissement are:<BR>Millennium Opera, Ambassador, Villa Opera Drouot, Pavillion de Paris, Lafayette, Astra.<BR><BR>Maybe a search by name would turn up information on each hotel or maybe rants and raves might have some info.<BR><BR>I have not stayed at any of these hotels.

I’m planning to be in Paris next April and I’m staying in the 9th. I want to eat at Chartier, visit the Musee de la Vie Romantique and spend a day exploring the covered shopping Passages.<BR><BR>The passages are from the Belle Epoque and run from the 9th down into the 1st. Lonely Planet's Paris has a walking tour layed out for the Passages.

I agree with David -- if I were to stay in that area, it would be around the square de la Trinite area which is relatively pleasant and convenient and attractive. There are some cheap hotels around the Grands Boulevards metro stop (on Cite Bergere and in general around there) which isn't quite as attractive an area to me, but would be convenient. That is near the Jouffroy passage and Chartier. I might stay around there also. <BR><BR>This is an old artistic quartier of Paris in parts (Chopin lived around there in several apartments, on bd Poisonniere and square d'Orleans, for example), and there's a famous Art Deco theater (the Rex) around Bonne Nouvelle stop. MOnet, of course, knew that area well and painted a lot of scenes around there, I'm thinking of his paintings of Gare St-Lazare in particular.<BR><BR>So, it's an okay area to stay in the right parts -- some tourists who don't know Paris well might not like it, but others wouldn't mind, hard to tell.
