9 Days in Italy

Ok, I'm planning a 9-10 Day Trip in Italy for early next year, and just want some opinions on what I shouldn't miss. I have to Fly in and out of Milan but thats all I am tied down to.

I'm really open to anything, a mix between touristy and non-touristy (if thats possible) would be nice. My first thoughts were Milan, Florence, and Venice. But, after reading alot of posts in this forum, I'm not sure any more..perhaps I can fit in Rome? Any ideas would be great

Thoughtstarters only.
I think I'd leave Rome for another trip and stay in the Northern areas. Add Verona to your list of possibles - quite near Venice. I would'nt waste much time, if any, in Milan. If you are into mountains and great scenery give some thought to crossing into Southern Switzerland, or South Western Austria - it really is lovely. The borders are practically non existent now, so you don't have to lock into just Italy.

I like the Florence & Venice emphasis. I make a similar trip this summer, and I opted to skip Milan. I didn't hear many positive comments about it.

For your information, if you want to see Rome but don't want to divide your trip into three cities, it is possible to take a Eurostar train from Florence to Rome and back in the same day. It isn't ideal, but at least you get to see a few things in Rome. For example, I left Florence on a 9:00 a.m. train, and by 11:00 I was at the Colosium. I spent several hours of the afternoon in Vatican City, including St. Peters (I went through the lower area to see the burial spot of St. Peter and to the dome), and then had dinner between Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. Caught the 8:30 train back to Florence, and was snug in bed by 11:00. Just a thought.

But by all means go to Florence and Venice.

We did a similar trip in and out of Milan several years ago. We went straight from Milan via train to Venice for 3 nights, then to Florence(actually stayed in a villa outside of Florence) for 3 nights then took a train to Rome and stayed 3 nights there. From Rome took a train back to Milan and spent the final night there. It was alot in a short time, but it's do-able and we were very pleased with the trip.
