You absolutely must go to the Bernese Oberland region. I was there last year with a couple of friends (stayed in Interlaken), and it is simply spectacular. Make sure to take a trip to the top of the Jungfrau if the weather is good.

Luzern was also very pretty and peaceful. It was a nice, relaxing city to be in, and the lake is beautiful. A fun little side trip is to stay at the top of Mt. Rigi (about 45 min away), and see the sunrise and sunset. Be sure to bring your camera!

If you can, take the ~3 hr train ride from Luzern to Interlaken, and you'll be wow'ed by the stunning vistas you'll see on your way there.

Good luck on your trip! Switzerland is a wonderful country, and I can't wait to go back myself.

Hi there,
It depends on what you like and where you are flying into. A quick suggestion would be:
1) Bern -very neat city if you like architecture. This is one of my favorite cities in CH.
2) Luzern - I live here and it is typical Swiss. Some say Disneyland but it is a working city with a beautiful location.
and then,
3) Explore the Berner Oberland which have the majestic mountain scenes that you are expecting.

That is plenty for 8 days.

If you are flying into Geneva, an alternative may be:
1) Geneva
2) Montreux and Vevey
and then,
3) up to the Mont Blanc area for your majestic mountain landscapes!

It is tough to go wrong.

cheers,
Jan

Hi. My vote for a first visit would be Lac Leman (Lausanne, Vevey, or Montreux), Lakes Thun or Brienz (w/daytrips into the mountains and to Berne), and Lucerne--3 places to stay. But how you'll squeak that out of 8 days I don't know. You might be able to manage if you can fly into Geneve and out of Zurich, but I don't think that's possible any longer. You didn't say if you're driving or training. Anyway, you cannot fail. Bon voyage, and do you mean THIS May? J.

Thank you all for your quick response, I am flying from New York into Zurich, based on your suggestion here is what I intend to do. Start from Zurich go onto St. Moritz, take a Glacier Express to Zermat. Go to Interlaken and visit Grindelwald. Visit Luzern Bern and return back to Zurich. I just need to work out the logistic. Any recommendation on hotels at any of this locations? Yes it is May of 2003

Good morning, Maz
Here are a few hotel suggestions for
the various cities you will be visiting
Zurich --KINDLI
St. Moritz - STEFFANI
Luzern - Wilden Mann
Grindelwald - SCHWEIZERHOF
Bern - METROPOLE
Zermatt - MONTE ROSA OR SCHWEIZERHOF
Have used all of these hotels more than
once and were very satisified with them.
The Glacier Express requires reservatioins and if you wish to make
use of the dining car which requires a
seperate additional reservations...
If you wish to stay in Interlaken would
suggest the Europe or the Carlton both
of which are close to Interlaken Ost and
the BOB....Richard of LaGrange Park, IL

MAZ- it's TOO much! Slow down a bit, squishing in Zurich, St. Moritz, Zermatt, Grindelwald, Lucerne and Bern in 8 days is an endurance test, not a vacation! (IMHO)
