A stroll around Hyde Park, stop in at the Serpentine Gallery for the current (free) exhibition), walk down Exhibition Rd to the museums, have a look at the V&A and have tea there
Take a boat ride down to Greenwich, walk through the park to the Observatory (free), take the DLR back.
Hampstead Heath?
Visit the Wetlands Project in Barnes?
If wet, stay in town, visit the National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, the Courtauld (all near each other around Trafalgar Square), possibly Covent Garden and up Neal St.
The National Gallery is open until 9 on Wednesdays, so that could help with the hiatus before you meet your friend at 8 if you don't want to sit in a café or a pub.
