6th/7th Ar. or 9th Ar in Paris?

I am loving many of the hotels in the 6th and 7th Arrondissements in Paris but am having a hard time finding an available one at the right price. I have looked at several nice hotels in the 9th Ar. that fit my budget and are available (e.g. Le Trois Poussins and Hotel Monte Carlo). I am trying to find something for around $200 per night or less. Should I continue searching for a hotel in 6th/7th area or will I enjoy staying in the 9th? Thank you!

I would much prefer the 9th or 10th arrondissement over the 6th or 7th.

I just made reservations at the Hotel Bonaparte in the 6th. The prices are $174 per night for the nights we will be there in July & then we get a 10% discount for the nights we are there in August. This is my first trip to Paris so I can't tell you which arrondisement is better from personal experience, but check out the Bonaparte.

The 9ème arrondissement is just fine, but there are plenty of hotels under $200 in the 6ème and 7ème as well.

I prefer the 9th to the 6th/7th. I've stayed at les Trois Poussins and commented on it in a recent post for someone considering it. I also stayed at Hotel Langlois right near the Trinite metro stop and liked it a little better, if you want to check it out. http://www.hotel-langlois.com/

Even when you can find similar prices, it's a question of whether you prefer "perfect post card Paris" or "real Paris where normal people live." It's sort of like going to NYC and having a debate about whether 5th Avenue in Manhattan or Brooklyn is more interesting.

(I suppose that I should mention that you are just as likely to find similar prices in the 6th and 9th as you are to find between 5th Avenue and Brooklyn.)

I like the 5th and 6th best and this is the reason why:

I can walk right out the front door of my hotel and march over to see the Seine.

For me, the Seine IS PARIS.

The 9th is fine, especially if you love the Food Halls at Galleries Lafayette as I do.

But, you are not within walking distance to the Seine.

Budget Hotel in the 5th: Hotel College de France.

Check it out. You are a 5-minute walk from the Seine.

Bon soir,
Pepper

Interesting. I sometimes go for a couple of weeks without seeing the Seine (even if I pass under it on the metro).

However, I very much understand how visitors can become attached to it, when they can't see it whenever they want. If I jump on the metro right now, I can be at the Seine in about 14 minutes and I live nowhere near it.

Well, you can walk to the Seine from the 9th, it just takes longer (I actually have done it) and does allow you to the see more of the city....assuming that is important to you. I have stayed in the 9th and liked it a lot. My preference is the 6th but it is only my preference. I love Paris and you can certainly enjoy it no matter where you stay.

What do you plan to do while there? It might help to think about it that while deciding where to stay. The great thing about staying in different areas of the city is that it allows you to learn more about the city and discover something new.

I don't think you can go wrong.

explore2012, as with most things, it's personal preference.
The one kicker to our responses, is that you didn't mention when you were going. Prices fluctuate monthly, weekly.

One trusted site, for me at least is www.venere.com No, I have no affiliation with those folks.

You don't have to book with them, but you can get an idea about each of the hotels they offer, by arrondissement, and actual reviews of people who've stayed there.

Personally, I like the 6th, even though there's beaucoup tourists like me. It seems more alive, especially at night. I've had the good fortune to have visited Paris 15-20 times, and have stayed all over the City.

IMHO, if it is your first trip esp'lly, the 6th or 7th. The 7th has well-off "residential" areas if that is what you prefer, even if the Eiffel Tower is the main attraction.

I have never stayed in the 9th but have stayed in the 6th - it is charming, near everything and seems to have the feel of old Paris to me.

Each has its merits. Have stayed at the Hotel Langlois in the 9th and Hotel St-Pierre in the 6th which is 2 blocks from the Odeon metro.

We have not stayed in the 9th. Always stay in the 6th. I like the ambience in the 6th and 7th better and find them more convenient to walk to everywhere. Like many, we love the Seine and the bridges so the 6th is more convenient for us. I'm sure, however, that you can find a nicely located hotel in the 9th.

Years ago, I used to stay in the 9th for business. Maybe it was because I was working, but I never thought the 9th the was great for vacationing. I would definately choose without qualification the 5th or the 6th. Even when I would stay at the well situated Concorde St Lazare(now its the Concorde Opera?), I felt I would rather have a 3 star in the 6th

We like the 7th as it is quieter and less crowded with good choice of restaurants and short walk to the Seine. like the 4th too but crowded.

I do like to stay in parts of the 9th (between Clichy and Trinite metro), but the fact is that when a lot of people refer to the 9th or find hotels there, they aren't talking about the residential part where I stay. They are talking about the very southern part near the Opera and dept stores and I would not like to stay there. Of course, that area is "closer" to these things tourists seem to want. And that is just personal preference, I dislike staying in areas in cities that are full of tourists and very hectic and have a lot of stores, so that's why I don't like St Germain (and it is expensive, also).

I checked and the H Monte Carlo is sort of over near the Folies Bergere (several hotels over there, it seems a bit run down in that area to me), in between Le Peletier and Cadet metro stops. I don't know that area so well but do like it more around Trinite church/metro.

I stay in a studio in the 9th every year, for the past 4 years. Rates have been 250 Euro per week!! July is 300 Euro per week.
There is also several Accorhotels.com that are in the areas you are looking at. A couple have a 40% off sale now.

Regarding walking to the river from the 9th vs the 5-6th, a few years ago I was staying, as I do, in the 18th (beyond the 9th from the river) and had left all my shopping until the last day. Horror of horrors, a transport strike! So I walked. From the far side of Sacre Coeur all over the Right Bank, including along the river. I'm a person of a certain age and would not have chosen it if I'd had a choice but it was perfectly doable including the hike back up the hill with my packages.

My point, the 9th is close enough to the river.
