66 Imperial vs 58 Le Real de luxe B&B in Rome

Does anyone have experience with either of these hotels in Rome?

Thanks!

All I know is there has been a fair bit of controversy over 58 Le Real de luxe (used to be 58 Via Cavour) because the owner seems to post on travel boards like these, pretending to be a happy customer giving a good review. Real reviews of this hotel seem to be less than positive, so I would be wary of this place.

Here's the thread about 58 Via Vacour (aka 58 Le Real de luxe). Read it and decide for yourself.

Many thanks for this information! It is so valuable and we definitely will NOT book at this hotel. We currently have a reservation at Hotel Oceania which is listed in the Steves book so hopefully it will be a safe choice. Anyone know of any reason not to stay at Hotel Oceania???

So the name has changed from 58 Via Cavour? I recall when this person (the owner most likely) would post alot here posing as a satisfied guest. He/she also posted lots of the same types of comments on another travel site.

I read something somewhere or other that said that 66 Imperial and 58 Le Real de luxe are sister hotels. I know that lately 66 Imperial seems to have an abundance of satisfied customers posting similar-sounding reviews on every forum.

lionel1, the period from about Dec. 25-Jan. 6 is considered high season according to the hotel sites.

Hi WillTravel,

If you click on Lionel1's name, you will see this is his only post.

It is AMAZING (in a creepy way) how the mere mention of this hotel brings out first time posters in hoards... ALL defending the hotel in some way or another! And usually using very poor English...

We stayed at 58 via Cavour in Sept 2004. I think le real de luxe is the old name. The rooms were very nice - newly remodeled and the bathrooms were big and beautiful. I wish the owner would stop trying to sell the place, he only hurts his business. I would definitely stay there again. It was a great value. The breakfast was packaged pastries, and the cappacino and coffee came from a metered machine - 1 per person per day. But for the price, that was ok. It was very convenient to the train station.

Oh damn -- he s back.

The earlier thread was one of the funniest troll threads -- though of course I disapprove of troll threads.

The owner or his tout got progressively more defensive and outlandish in his claims, his English got even more fractured and it all ended up with people insulting one another IN LATIN.

I would never stay at his dreadful-sounding hotel but I would gladly spend an evening with him discussing the Eclogues of Virgil

Lionel,

I have written the Fodors editors about you. Also, it is Mrs. TexasAggie, not Mr.

If you care to search through my other posts you will easily find that I am a woman, I live in Denver, and that I am a tax accountant. I believe there are probably even posts about classes I took in college and trips I took as a child. I have emailed back and forth with several other posters, and have certainly never tried to conceal my identity.

I am perfectly within my right to recommend a hotel that I like in Rome. I have also recommended hotels I like in other cities (Florence, Monterosso, Rothenburg, Bamberg). Again, if you care to conduct a search, you can see that I have recommended other hotels just as highly as the Oceania, if not higher. Hotel Villa Steno in Monterosso gets my highest marks for my favorite hotel in all of Italy.

I am also allowed to post my opinion (be it negative or positive) about other establishments. I am allowed to pull up and post reviews from other websites such as www.tripadvisor.com. I fully admit to having done this about the hotel you so adamently defend.

It is called a difference of opinion, Lionel, and it is perfectly allowed on these boards. You are allowed to post glowing reviews of 58 Le Real de Luxe, and I am allowed to post my suspicions and my own personal negative opinion.

You seem to be ranting a great deal about me calling the Oceania a hotel instead of a B&B. In my reviews of the hotel I made sure to list that breakfast was included (I even described the breakfast), so I am not sure what the problem is. If it is incorrect to refer to an establishment that serves breakfast as a hotel, then turn me in to the "authorities" of just about every other city in which I have stayed. In the States, it is common to use hotel and B&B interchangeabley and it is certainly not illegal to do so.

In any case, dear Lionel, please feel free to continue your praise of the hotel in quesion, and I will feel free to post my opinions. I will refrain from making comments about my opinion of you personally, and will only comment on the subject matter of your posts in the future. I'd appreciate it if you will do the same.

In doing so, we both enjoy the freedom of speech that this board allows

I assume you are saying it is illegal in ITALY to use the terms interchangeably. Well, I am not Italian and I don't live in Italy so I was not aware of any such rules or laws. In my Rick Steves guidebook the establishment was called "Hotel Oceania", so that is what I call it. Feel free to rant about stupid Americans now ;-)

As I stated, in all of my reviews I always describe the breakfast I was served.

I don't know how many rooms the Oceania has, but we stayed in room 11 so I'd imagine there were more than 5. Just curious, what does that have to do with anything? Is there another "rule" in Italy regarding the number of rooms in a hotel/B&B/motel/inn (whatever the correct legal designation)?

What is this guy's problem? He's all over the board ranting and raving on old threads about this particular hotel. Sheesh!

I'd just ignore him, TexasAggie.

Hey lionel Just admit it! Your hotel is a DUMP and you rip your customers off!
The breakfast is the worst in Italy and you have a big rude mouth. Now go away!

The "Topo Gigio" English (remember Topo Gigio on Ed Sullivan in the 60s??)is just too much.

Most likely this poster is not Italian.
This guy isn't just a phoney, he is likely a troll POSING as a phoney -- i.e. posing as a tout for the hotel.

His combative manner is quite different from the "injured innocence" of the defender of 58 via Cavour on previous threads. Hence my suspicions.
