6 days in Switzerland: Grindelwald base
Hi Experts, we are traveling to Europe for 6 days from Frankfurt for our first trip to Switzerland (not counting the one night stay at Zurich two years ago). We have been advised to make Grindelwald as Base and then take day trips. We are planning to visit Lucerne and Grueyes and stay in BO for others days (Junbgfrau/lauterbrunnen etc). we will have two kids (13 and 4), so don't plan to do a whole lot of hiking with little one. We are more interested in natural beauty and less of snow. Need your suggestions:
1. Whether we should make grindelwald as our base for all 6 days instead of earlier plan of staying 3 nights in Lucerne and 3 nights in interlaken specially when we will have luggage to carry around with us
2. We will be flying into frankfurt and then taking train to Basel and have to catch the flight from frankfurt on way back. So is it better if we rent a car from Basel to Lucerne or Grindelwald instead of train and keep the car for 6 days, specially if we stay in Grindelwald as base? We will take 3-4 days flexi pass for going around BO etc.
3. Is it practical to go to Lucerne or Grueyes as day trip from Grindelwald? Will driving be faster/better option (it seems train takes 2-3 hours and driving takes a little over 1 hour.)
Any other suggestions. Thanks for your time and advise in advance.

Answers to your questions 1. I would spend all six days in Grindelwald, as you have children with you there is more life in Grindelwald than Wengen. It's not worth changing from Interlaken to Grindelwald for such a short time e.
2. Personally I would not bother with a car. You may find that need to leave Grindelwald the day before your flight, depending on the departure time check on the Swiss Rail website www.sbb.ch/en
3. Gruyeres is a long day trip from Grindelwald and there are several train changes, again have a look on the train site. Lucerne is two hours from Interlaken Ost so add on the time it takes you to get there from Grindelwald, but yes i would do that trip.
Your children might like the Open AMuseum at Ballenberg near Briez, you could combine this with a cruise on Lake Brienz

Don't bother with a car for your time in the BO as it will just sit there. Public transportation is fantastic in the BO. You will be taking trams and trains and lifts during your time there. You can't even drive to most of the BO. Grindelwald is much more touristy than other places in the BO so as long as you are aware of that, that's fine. It's a beautiful area. Your family will love it.
