Do you LEAVE Munich on September 30th or arrive. I believe that October fest Ends on October 1st however, you will be there at a time when there may be heavier then usual tourist activity. I advise you book your hotels NOW if you have not done so. Go to RailEurope.com for Rail schedules for all of Europe. And a nice trip from Munich is, and I can't EVEN spell this Nechwenstien Castle in Bavaria all though we drove to the castle from Munich, I saw plenty of brochures for day tours.

Go to www.bahn.de. This is the website for the german rail system. It is also in english. You can do all the checking you need about train schedules, prices etc.

I lived in Munich for 6 months about 3 years ago. You really can "see" Munich in 2 days. 1 day to do the old part of town and the englisher garten. 2nd day to tour the palace or go to the concentration camp.

Good day trips are Neuschwanstein Castle (Crazy King Ludwig's castle). You can also reach Salzburg in a day trip or Innsbruck. Oberammergau is hopelessly touristy to me. If you are a WWII buff try to get down to the Eagles Nest in the Alps.

We took a day trip via train to Berchtsgaden (Hitler's Eagle's Nest). Very nice scenery & interesting. The German rail site at http://bahn.hafas.de is the best for schedules.
