6 days in England

My husband and I are going to England for the first time this October. We will have 6 nights - 3 in London, 2 in Bath. What would you recommend for that 6th night?
Thanks for your advise.

I'd spend more time in London & less in Bath. Also the Cotswolds is a nice place to spend some time if you have a car. Or Oxford.

It truly depends on what you are interested in. It also depends on your flight times. If you are flying out in the morning I would strongly recommend staying fairly near the airport.

You really don't need two nights in Bath - it is a very small city with lots to see but all is within walking distance - people can do a reasonable day trip from London and see most of Bath. So one night is very ample.

So I might recommend adding another night to London - OR better yet stay one night in Bath and two nights in Oxford/Woodstock or somewhere in the eastern Cotswolds. There you will be about an hour+ from Heathrow and be able to see some wonderful villages plus the Oxford colleges etc.

(If you are flying through Gatwick stay in Kent/East Sussex)
I agree with:
>You really don't need two nights in Bath - it is a very small city with lots
>to see but all is within walking distance

Assuming you're a strong walker, that is. Even so, I'd take a bus tour to see the Crescent, etc.

>people can do a reasonable day trip from London and see most of Bath.

This assumes the traffic between London and Bath is minimal. It _can_ take ages!

>So one night is very ample.

Adequate, maybe, but not "very ample," IMO. Bath is worth savoring, not just seeing.

>So I might recommend. . . somewhere in the
>eastern Cotswolds. There you will be about an hour+ from Heathrow. . .

The Cotswolds are more like 90 minutes from LHR, in light traffic. Oxford and Blenheim Palace would be a good, long day: one of them in the morning, the other in the afternoon.

>If you are flying through Gatwick stay in Kent/East Sussex

Leeds Castle in Kent is well worth a side trip to see. Brighton, on the south coast, is also a gem.

Just a couple of clarifications - A day trip to Bath from London via train has no traffic problems (assuming no faults on the line, which is no sure thing). All of the tour companies do day trips London>Bath -- I'm not advocating them just explaining you really can see Bath in a day so an overnight is adequate - not perfect but these folks only have six nights total.

I mentioned the EASTERN Cotswolds - someplace like Charlbury - about the same distance from London as Woodstock. The main Cotswold areas are 90+ minutes from Heathrow.

The main reason I recommend getting out of Bath is that on the itinerary they have put together they won't see any "England". Bath is wonderful -- right up there w/ York and Edinburgh on my list of fav cities. But you can see a lot of it in one day and they can then get out of the towns and see some country/farms/villages etc.

If they take two nights in Oxon/Glos, they can do one day Blenheim/Oxford and one day wandering the Cotswold villages.

>A day trip to Bath from London via train has no traffic problems

Train? What's a train? ;-)

(I tend to assume that Americans just want to _drive_ everywhere.)

>an overnight is adequate - not perfect

True "adequate" (not "very ample") for a quick look-see.

>but these folks only have six nights
>total.

Also true. However, I like to try to encourage Americans to go for a quality experience rather than a quantity experience of Britain. Merely steaming through as many sights as you can in the limited time you have and snapping a few quick photos hardly makes for a good understanding of the place.

Be that as it may, although you're not advocating the tour companies' day trips, that might not be a bad way for them to go to any of the places we're suggesting. You can get day trips by coach at Victoria Station, Regina:
http://www.travelbritain.org/newhome...s/buscoach.htm

>The main reason I recommend getting out of Bath is that on the itinerary
>they have put together they won't see any "England" . . . they can then get
>out of the towns and see some country/farms/villages etc.

An excellent and insightful point. But this is best done by car, too, n'est-ce pas?

Now I've really confused things -- Yes, definitely by car!

(I only mentioned the train to show you can do a day trip to Bath w/o traffic)

And if they are set on the 2 nights in Bath they probably should skip trying to see anything else - three nights in London is too long for a layover and too short to see much. So if it is to be 2 nights in Bath they'd be better off spending the other 4 nights in London. (For this itinerary they wouldn't need a car though.)

We spent three nights in Bath in April. We had plenty to do,especially with side trips. I'm sure that the pleasure of staying in our B&B contributed greatly to our wonderful trip to Bath.

Regina,

I'd spend your 6th night in London. Three days is not enough time to see this city, especially if those include travel days.

Dave White

Regina, 2 nights in Bath is fine so you'll have time to relax and enjoy the place. I agree with a fourth night in london. It's good Not to rent a car on your 1st trip....take the train to Bath (if you land at gatwick, take direct to Bath via Reading on a Thames Train & you'll avoid London. Then from Bath to London Paddington Station).
Hi Regina, if you go as recommended to Bath, from gatwick, then London Paddington, check out the open return supersaver ticket. This ticket will allow you to go to Bath and return to London Paddington, with the option to break your return journey if desired. It works on any train except the Tube. Joyce
