It's great that you figured it out. It is not hard to find if you search in Italian, but quite difficult (but not impossible) if you search in English. If you have a Yahoo address (or wouldn't mind getting one) I can give you a link to a lot of photos I took of this festa in 2001. They're on a Yahoo group site that unfortunately can be accessed only with a Yahoo ID (free) and password.

cmt,
I have to admit, I did search in Italian!
( I don't speak it too well, but I can read it well enough)

I'd love to see your pictures! I have a yahoo address-- can you give me the link?

Marcy, here's the link: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Basilicata_culture/ You need to join the group with your Yahoo iD, and when you're logged into that Yahoo ID go to the actual site. On the left side is a list of folders. Click on "photos." The first "Accettura" folder is mine (with a few photos taken by someone else and labeled as such). The subfolder called "la festa" has photos of...guess what...la festa (i.e., la festa del maggio, aka il Sangiuliano). The folder called "Tour of Basilicata" is also mine. The others were contributed by various other people, so there are a few places I cannot identify.

cmt,
Thanks so much for sharing your pictures!
That's an area of Italy that I don't know anything about, but it looks fascinating.
Do you still have family there?

Marcy: A few months before my trip I wrote to the person in the town in charge of birth and death records and asked him that. He researched it for me and told me I have one relative in town: a cousin of the 5th degree. I met him when I was there. A first cousin of his from Accettura but now lives near Salerno, was visiting him for the festa, and I spent a lot of time with both of them. She is also a cousin of the 5th dregree to me.

There's a whole big Fodors thread re Basilicata, if you're interested. http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34401476

That must have been great to make contact with your relatives in Italy!

I'll check out the thread about Basilicata-- another place in Italy to explore....

Next clue for the puzzle:
8 letters, 3rd one is the "U" in Accettura.

Town in a harsh area of Spain, where a statue of the town's native son conquistador dominates the central plaza. There is a matching statue in the plaza of a city in Peru.

Breaking the rules slightly for a little change of pace.

A Basque ball game uses three of the letters from Trujillo, but which ones, and where, is a secret. Two words: 3 and 4 letters.

We need to get some more people playing this game-- I'm running out of ideas!

Anybody want to go next?

You're right (about jai alai and about the need to get more players). This game has been running since July. Most people get tired of it after a while, but I still like it.

Marcy, you might as well take your turn. Maybe it will catch on and others will join if the thread is active and visible for a while.

An architect very much in the news this week who now has big plans in Beijing. First name: 4 letters. Surname: 6 letters. The second letter of the last name is the "n" from Stein.

OK, while we're waiting for DT to come up with one..three letters; secone letter is the "a" in Paul.

Clue: A town in southern France that figured prominently in the Andrew-Lloyd-W. musical, "Aspects of Love."
