If you put 0:00 in for the departure time, you will get an entire listing of the trains for the day. Also, use the Italian names for the cities-Venezia, Roma, etc.
I agree: try trenitalia again. It's the best for "seeing" the entire schedule.

FYI, the Santa Chiara in the Pantheon area of Rome has an apartment that sleeps 5 comfortably and it is reasonable.

Also, in my opinion the small towns of Tuscany - where the villa rentals would be - is very quiet and laid back so if that is what you are looking for, go for it. For me, I prefer the options of Florence with trips to the towns I want to visit. I do not care for the hassle of having to get into a car every time I want to eat or shop, etc.

I have done similiar trips with 3 and 4 girlfriends and am planning another for September. First -we all loved Tuscany and the CT but the negative is that it is mellow at night, especially if you rent a villa outside of a town. If you want to be able to enjoy the night life I would definitly spend a least half the trip in Rome/Florence/Venice.
Packing light has always been a significant challange. 4 people in a mid sized car with four large carry-on size bags is about all we could fit - especially if you need some room for growth due to shopping. Make sure you all pack consistently -talk about how many times are you going to dress up vs. going casual. This helps eliminate over packing for new travelers.
Possibly consider flying into Venice stay two nights - train to Siena day trips into Florence and rent a car for Tuscany day trips then train to Rome. Using the car train combo would eliminate the concern of having to fit girls and luggage in the car. I would assume that you would spend a least 2 hours in the car each day touring Tuscany. We did a similiar trip with 4 and a car instead of the train - it is a little rushed but a great mix of Italy.
Second choice for "under the Tuscan Sun" fans - consider Rome and the Amalfie coast. Less traveling and great scenery.
