Then I am about to not travel to Europe for the 20th time next month!
Unless I can count the time we picked up the car at the airport to trek through Umbria.

Yes railpasses pay for the basic train fare - sleeping options are extra as makes sense - from couchettes for a modest extra fee or even reclining seats (not comfy to me) to private compartments which can be rather pricey but still cheaper than what the average folk pays for a hotel.
And there is the 7 pm rule where if you have a flexipass and you board the overnight train after 7 pm you put the next day's date in as your unlimited travel day - thus you could go on one day on a pass literally from one end of Europe to the other. For example night train Amsterdam to Zurich then day train onto Italy - using one day on a pass.
