Now that the site seems to be co-operating, what do you think of the idea of your own personal blog, janisj? Or a collection of tips, suggestions, etc? Packing list, tips for various places in the UK,elsewhere..Time consuming but I bet it would be wonderful to log into such a blog.

This is BEYOND bizarre - I tried posting a reply again (not pasted, typing fresh) and it just froze. Yet it will let me post this?????

I do give talks about travel to the UK, Garden of the British Isles, etc and a very popular packing class. But because it is an avocation not a 'job' I made a decision years ago to not have a presence on line. Even w/o promoting myself at all, it can get out of hand. So no, I don't blog. Plus there are lots of other Fodorites who can contribute as much or more than I do.

Janisj,
In Edinburgh this past summer, we also stayed at the Travelodge on Meuse Lane. It really was a perfect location for train travel, airport shuttle stop nearby, and for us the Rabbie's Tour meeting place was only a few blocks away. The room (as most were) was newly redone and everything worked well. It was a good stay. Our only issue was the very small check in place/spot (not really a room) and the Meuse Lane's lackluster and somewhat dingy overall impression and appearance. It was not that welcoming. I'm not sure how you felt about it. Prices there for us were not as hefty as yours, as ours came in at 2 nights for 143 euro, then 5 nights later after the return from Rabbies Tour, 1 night at 124 euro, all booked weeks ahead. This was mid July, so I guess it was already gearing up for August prices and town events.
In York, did you get a chance to have a drink at the House of Trembling Madness?
Sounds like you had a great trip!!

Well Meuse lane is really sort of an alley so it didn't put me off at all. Was what I expected location-wise (but then I know Edinburgh very well and have walked by there lots of times). The location is so central.

That is just what most Travelodge lobbies are like. Some don't even have a 'real' front desk which this one did. They aren't usually my hotel of choice but are reliable and clean and have good beds, so one puts up w/ the economies of no restaurant, no lobby to speak of, etc.

Glad to see your trip report. I guess you weren't frisked at Parliament like I was that day last year. It was a great tour and we did get to have tea too after the tour but the security guard was something else.

Janisj....same issue for me. I typed a ton directly into Fodors and it would not preview or submit! What a pain! Finishing my TR has been challenging and I can't believe the issues have not been resolved.

Thanks for soldiering on with your report! I could feel your frustration oozing out of every stroke of the key pad!
Sorry but I had to laugh at your descriptions of playing lighting roulette and The gymnastic efforts to retrieve towels from the ceiling height bars. Those things make good stories after, but at the time can be mildly annoying.

europeannovice: nope -- no body frisk, and only a cursory check of my (smallish) handbag. Guess I'm harmless looking
denisea: You might want to add a post to the thread on the Help Forum -- they haven't responded in a few days but if we keep nagging them maybe they'll figure out what's happening.
irishface: Stuck with it and finished - but it was a PITA for sure.

Janis: thanks for the Parliament tour tip. We took the audio tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. We love Masterpiece Theatre and Engligh movies so it really brought it all alive. I never expected we would get to visit the House of Lords.
