4 Days in Ireland, Ending in Dublin

My boyfriend and I will be in London for a few days and will be spending a few days in Ireland as well.

We are staying in London until Monday morning, at which time plan to travel to Ireland. We do not have any inter-Europe travel booked so we are flexible as far as where to fly into. We were thinking about flying into Shannon or Galway and renting a car, making our way back to Dublin. The only SET plan we have in Ireland is that we must end our trip in Dublin - we fly out of Dublin back to the US on Friday morning, so should be in Dublin on Thursday as we'd like to spend some time there.

We have limited experience driving on the other side of the road. There are so many things I want to see - Blarney, Cliffs of Moher, Cork, etc. etc. etc. - but I realize this is unrealistic and we don't want to be rushed/stressed. Any suggestions on where to fly into from London and routes to Dublin that would expose us to beautiful scenery/historic towns/castles/bed and breakfasts?

Thank you!!!!!

No airport in Galway any more. Fly into Cork make your way up to Galway then across to Dublin. its a lot for 4 days.

I know the temptation is there to travel all around even if you only have four days. But I would suggest you resist that temptation and just base yourself in Dublin (without a rental car) or in one of the towns close to Dublin and the airport such as Malahide (with a rental car.) This is what we did on our first trip to Ireland when I realized we just didn't have time to "do it all". (With good flights between the U.S. and Ireland, I'm sure you'll come back and then you can do the western part of the country.)

My itinerary (staying in Malahide) would look something like:

Day 1: Arrive Dublin Airport, drive to Malahide, take DART to Dublin for remaining day of sightseeing.

Day 2: Driving day trip to Glendalough NP and the Wicklow Mountains. FANTASTIC scenery. Take the Short Spinc Trail at Glendalough for fabulous views of the countryside and glacial lakes.

Day 3: Driving day trip to Newgrange, Hill of Tara and Trim. You'll see castles, ancient sites and good scenery.

Day 4: Take DART to Dublin for a full day in the city.

If you decide to stay in Dublin, the day trips on Day 2 and Day 3 can be done through a tour company.

THANK you! Sounds like we could still see a lot but not be rushed.

One other option might be to fly to Kerry Airport (just outside of Killarney. Spend two or three days there (sans car) and then train to Dublin for one or two days.
Plenty of day tours, etcetera based in Killarney, also.

Thanks, Bob! What would you most recommend seeing if we based ourselves in Killarney?

Killarney National Park -- partly walkable, from Town Center. Take a day tour of the Gap of Dunloe and the Lakes. You can do a small bus tour of Dingle or a Big Bus tour of the Ring of Kerry.
See: http://derostours.com/new/all-tours/
Or, there are other companies, as well.

Other options include Ross Castle, Muckross House, Gardens and Traditional Farms ...

Then, there's always Killarney, itself!
