Has anyone on Fodors been to the 36th Division memorial? My father was a T-Patcher and was in the landing force on 9/9/43. I will be in the area in October and plan to go to Paestum, would like to pay my respects at the memorial. I assume it's walking distance from the Greek temples. Would love to hear from someone who has been there.

When we went to Paestum to visit the temples, we stayed at a small hotel/B&B just across the street called Il Granio. It was lovely. In the lounge area there was a book in Italian about the landing. It was full of photographs of the men moving through and around the Greek temples, guns in hand. Of course, we couldn't understand much of it but the pictures were quite moving. If you plan to stay in the area, I would definitely recommend you consider staying there.

Jelopez: yes, thank you,I'm familiar with the texas military forces site and just recently found the panoramio photo. My father didn't talk much about the war until late in his life but I recall his mentioning being at Paestum, the battle of Monte Cassino, Altavilla, and other places. When he described the frescoes at Pompeii, his eyebrows would wiggle up and down! I still have a little ashtray made of solidified lava he must have bought as a souvenir of eruption of Vesuvius in 1944. Nancy, thank you for mentioning the book. Perhaps I can find a copy while I'm there. We already have our b&b booked (in Amalfi) and will only make a day trip to Paestum.

... it would seem that the monument is in a park - the "Villa Comunale Sant’Anna di Torre di Mare"

.... can be seen if you use GoogleMaps to look up...

.... and then zoom in sufficiently! Perhaps you can even follow the path of Via Nettuno from there back to the archaeological site, and then Via Porta Giustizia to Paestum's train station - marked with a tiny blue train symbol?

(Can't promise you those are their true names, as Google sometimes gets it wrong - but evidently the roads physically lead on from one to another!)

Peter - thanks for the suggestion about Google Maps. That is helpful. I think after we visit the archaeological site, we should be able to follow Via Nettuno to the memorial, esp. as it seems to be right at the shore.
