Barcelona last week in April
Hi - looking for suggestions on where to stay. It will be myself and my mom - ages mid 40s and mid 70s. Ideally would like to be fairly central, although we have no issues walking a few minutes or using public transportation. Looking for something simple - private bath and breakfast but nothing fancy needed as long as it's clean.
We will be flying from LIverpool in to Barcelona and most likely arriving Monday and leaving on Saturday. Can we get to a hotel using public transportation or is a cab better?
We like to walk a lot and soak up the atmosphere when we visit somewhere new - so of course we'd be looking for recommendations for tapas bars!

Take a look at Banys Orientals in the medieval El Born district, lots of great tapas bars, cafés and restaurants on your door-step and close to everything. The Picasso museum, the famous Gothic Santa María del Mar church, the Cathedral and the spectacular Palau de la Música Catalana are all within a very few minutes walk. 105€ for a double: http://www.hotelbanysorientals.com/en/index.html

Some potentially great concert experiences in the Palau de la Música the last week of April.
Couldn't get more Spanish than the Saturday night "Concierto de Aranjuez" with music by Rodrigo and Manuel de Falla (and the French Bizet (Carmen)). http://www.palaumusica.cat/en/concie...d=False&cycle=

Have you considered an apartment? It can be more comfortable than a hotel room, no more cost and you can pick your location. You mentioned breakfast, but rather than pay a hotel's high prices, just find a nearby cafe.
A taxi from the airport to most lodgings should run no more than 30 euros for two persons.

I have been to Barcelona about 6 times and I usually stay in the Eixample District (might have forgotten how to spell it, though). It's just north of the Plaza Catalunya, and the upper part of Las Ramblas cuts through it. I find it lively and upscale, as well as less hectic and crowded than the area below the Plaza.
I like the Derby Hotel chain (Spanish chain). I've stayed at the Astoria (3*) and Claris (5*) before and thought that the Astoria was a very good value. It is about a 15 minute walk to the Plaza Catalunya, though - however, there is some public transit close by. I noticed on Derby's website that they now have some apartment-type hotels available, too.
