The Cotswolds are indeed the heart and one of the most beautiful parts of England. My wife and I spent 5 days there in 98. Stow-on-Wold or Morton-on-Marsh are both good central locations. We stayed at Old Farm and New Farm B&BS both in Morton-On-Marsh and leased by sisters - Highly recommend either. As for not having a car, you will be at a bit of a disadvantage. Not sure about bus schedules but the villages are not that far apart so should not be too much of a problem - We did have a car and if possible I urge you to rent one just for the flexability it offers.
Don't miss Burton-On-The-Water and Upper and Lower Slaughter. Broadway is recommended in the tourist books and is a nice village but way too many tourist and way too touristy. The other villages give one a real feel for the area. You can email me if you would like additional info or suggestions, The Cotswolds along with Cornwall was one of our most memorable trips.
Terry

Fodors

I'd say Stow-on-the-Wold. If you go into http://www.yahoo.co.uk, then enter "Stow-on-the-Wold travel" you'll get notes on the town. It's at a junction of roads, with busses in various directions. I'm afraid the Cotswolds are not well served by train.

Please write if I can help further. Welcome to England.

Ben Haines, London
benhaines@aapi.,co.uk
