You can get to Salzburg from Munich by train, about 1 1/2hrs time & beautiful scenery along the way. There are bus tours from Munich to the various King Ludwig castles - if you don't mind the tour type thing, just ask at your hotel. Munich itself is easy to get around in without a car.

I would skip the car. You can take the subway all over town. I live in Munich and don't have a car. You can take trains to Salzburg (1 1/2 to 2 hours), Neuschwanstein (take the train to Füssen - 2 hours) and most anywhere else you want to go. I think Nuremburg is 2 hours away by train. Cool stuff to see in Munich is the Residence, Alte Pinakothek(sp?), lots of churches, the Olympic Tower for a great view on a clear day, Nyphemburg Palace, the Viktualienmark and just wandering around.

This may be too late for Yury, but may be useful for anyone else going to the Munchen area. We were recently in the Chiemsee area, an easy autobahn drive from Munchen. It's very beautiful, with the large lake with its islands, including the Versailles-like palace on one and the tranquil old convent on the other; the whole surrounding region is lovely, especially the valley around Aschau, with its unspoilt villages, and great hiking opportunities. In all the towns and villages there was a good selection of hotels to suit all tastes. We also went to the Berchtesgaden area, which has stunning mountains and lakes, and is great for hiking, as well as the Hitler connection, which may be interesting for some. Either of the above areas would make a good and easy 3-4 day trip from Munchen or Salzburg.
