3 days in London-What to do?

Could anyone give me suggestions on which sites we should see in the 3 days we have in London?
Also, I would LOVE to visit a castle.
Are there any close by?

Gina,
Three days is not a lot for London, but you can get out to Windsor Castle in about 30 minutes or so, (there are also many "tours" that you can take, many 1/2 day ones to Windsor). Hampton Court is also about 30 min. up the Thames. You can get there via Waterloo Station (I would not try and do a boat trip, it's too time consuming). Both Windsor & Hampton Court are fantastic places. Of course there is Buckingham Palace right in London but you cannot visit as much of it as you can Hampton Court or Windsor. Kensington Palace is also right in London and while it is not a "castle" it is lovely (and the royal dress exhibit is also worth seeing if you are intersted in that sort of thing). Warwick Castle is about 2 hrs. north of London (via train from Marylebone Station, but it might be too much to do with only 3 days). You can also incorporate a day trip to Canterbury and Leeds Castle but again, with 3 days I think I would stick to the easier ones to get to (Windsor or Hampton Court). Have a great time!

Hi Gina, These are my opinions: Tower of London is a must. Get there first thing in the morning to avoid queues. I am not sure if you realise this, but it kind of classes as a castle. My favourite castle is Warwick Castle. You could do a day trip out there, and to Stratford upon Avon (Shakespeares home town, and also a picturesque village). I'd recommend one shoe. You can choose and book online (collect your ticket at the box office) at www.ticketmaster.co.uk
I totally recommend with that short a time frame doing the London Sightseeing Buses (you'll see them everywhere on the tourist map), which have a Hop On Hop Off circuit to the main attractions. At last look it cost about £2, but you could also combine it with a Thames sightseeing cruise (weather allowing!). I think its about £17 for both, and includes a discount to the Tower of London, Hampton Court. To be honest, all this plus visiting Westminster Abbey, National Museum or anything else that interests you, won't leave time for much else! Enjoy - and don't collapse into a heap of exhaustion afterwards.
Regards
Jo

A couple of corrections!
I guess you'd want to go to a "show" not a shoe!
And the sightseeing bus would be a bargain at £2, but £12 is much more likely.
Regards
Jo
Hi Gina

I am a Londoner--so will give you a Top 10 things to do, from the perspective of a local! These are my favourite things to do in London:

1. Visit the glass gallery at the V&A museum. Some of the exhibits are more than 3000 years old--and they have survived! Also, the costume and jewellery sections are amazing.

2. Go to the theatre: if you like Abba, try and get tickets to "Mamma Mia", the musical based around their music. It's GREAT! If not, there are loads of great plays and shows on at the moment.

3. Walk to the top of Primrose Hill or Parliament Hill on Hampstead Heath and enjoy a great view of London.

4. Try to decipher the Rosetta Stone and walk round the Elgin Marbles exhibit at the British Museum - my favourite museum in London. And it's FREE!

5. Lose yourself in the National Gallery - again, it's free!

6. Walk across Westminster Bridge from the south bank and marvel at the view. I drove over this bridge lately when the sun was shining on the Houses of Parliament and London was dazzling and I remembered why I love it here!

7. Browse the antique stalls in the Portobello Road, like Hugh Grant in Notting Hill.

8. Go shopping in London's best shopping streets. Not Oxford Street (far too crowded and hectic!) but the Kings Road and Kensington High Street. Better shops, better location!

9. Walk along the Thames by Hammersmith Bridge, stopping for a drink in one of the best pubs in London (the Dove)

10. Go out for a curry in any of London's local Indian restaurants. Chicken tikka masala is officially the nation's favourite dish!

-----

If you want to see a castle, Windsor is pretty unbeatable. The oldest inhabited castle in the country and in a lovely town. You can get to Windsor by train from Paddington in 30-40 minutes or drive down the M4 (takes about the same time).
