2wks and four destinations in italy, possible?

2wks and four destinations in italy, possible?
WE are going to Italy in late Oct. and would like to go to Rome, Florence, Umbria and Palermo. Is this doable and will we enjoy the rush?

I don't think I'd try for Palermo (in Sicily/southern Italy desrves its own trip!) in the trip as Florence. You COULD stay in Rome and see parts of Umbria, then move to Florence and see Tuscany from there. That's probably the option I would choose so as to minimize the time spent checking in/checking out. You could even see the sights ofg Florence as a day trip from Rome quite easily, but if you don't spend the evening somewhere, you never get a chance to soak up the atmosphere and relax. Thus I'd probably move once.

We were first time visitors to Europe when we went to Italy in August 2003. What did we know? We drove from Venice to the Amalfi Coast and then up to Rome in 14 nights - 3 in Venice, 1 in Lucca, 2 in Orvieto, 1 in Caserta, 3 on the Amalfi Coast, 4 in Rome. If we were "rushed", we didn't know it. We were so enthralled by all that Italy had to share that we couldn't wait to get up and get going each day.
I do agree, though, that alot of time is wasted with several check ins and outs.

I think the Palermo one makes it the most difficult as its so far away. You would really need to take a flight to Palermo which in my opinion is a lot if you are not going to spend your whole time in Sicily.
In May of 2004, we did the following:
One night in Florence
Two nights in Cinque Terre
Five nights in Tuscany
One night in Tivoli as a stop to Amalfi
Four nights in Ravello
Last night at the airport for early flight.
It was perfect for us and we like to drive. We didnt want to be in big cities either. We get restless after 4 nights so moving isnt a big deal for us.
How may actual nights will you have? It better to count nights than days as the travel days on either end sometimes 'dont count" quite as much.

Hello swiftbl, it would be a bit too much travelling for me but we all have different travelling styles.
Have you thought about staying in Rome, doing some daytrips from there (Orvietto for example) and than flying to Sicily?
I agree that stating how many nights you will have in Italy gives a better idea as to exactly how long you will have for enjoying Italy.
BTW, I assume your airline tickets have been purchased. But if not you might consider checking out "open jaw" tickets also known as "multi-city" tickets so you could avoid backtracking. Best regards and enjoy planning your trip!

This will still give you about a week to explore Rome. There are other day trips that are doable from Rome if this is not enough, but I think you will find so much to do and see in Rome that the two daytrips will be plenty.

EASILY doable, and I wouldn't think of dropping Palermo-it's fascinating, and with the budget carriers now operating from Italy, you can fly from Rome, Florence and other Italian cities to Palermo for practically nothing, and two weeks gives you plenty of time to enjoy ALL those areas-stick with your original plan-you'll be very glad you did.
