2 week trip to Norway in August
I'm planning a 2 week trip to Norway in August and would welcome any suggestions on what to see and the best way to travel... car, train, boat. I'll be starting in Oslo.
Thanks,
Glotzwb

I would recommend doing something like:
http://www.norway.com/itf/itf_tour.a...;r=0&id=21
Takes you to many of the best-known spots and sceneries in Norway.
If not I would take the train to Bergen and rent a car there. Do a roundtrip by car starting/ending in Bergen or Voss. Recommended itinerary would be something like:
http://www.visitnorway.com/templates....aspx?id=32954
When in Geiranger one might also visit the Trollstigen road and the Art Nouveau city Aalesund. A 'must' would be Briksdal Glacier (Olden, Stryn).

If Helen's suggestion isn't enough to fill up your days please tell us some more of what your interests are, your budget as well as what sites/locations you had in mind and it becomes easier to help you.

Hi
think about the weather. Temps in N Norway can be around freezing overnight by end August. On the other hand, you will still have reasonable hours of daylight.
Historical weather info here : http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv...historical.htm

First of all the link you provided is in the case of Norway completely useless as it seems to list a yearly average for all of Norway which tells you exactly zilch...
But in Oslo in August the sun will set around 24-01 I beleive... and at night it falls down to around +10C and at day it's often above +20C, and the water is usually warm.

Hai! - a different Helen here.
I went to Norway last summer, last 2 weeks in August. My husband and 18 month old went, too.
We travelled by train and hurtigruten primarily - but as we went all the way to Bodo and Tromso (I can't make the os with slashes!) we also flew Wideroe. Check the Wideroe airlines website (also Braathens and any other local air co) - last year they had summer passes that were a great deal. We missed them by 1 week. Darnit, but it is worth checking again. If you add air in, you can go very far north!
We only rented a car in the Lofotens - they are beautiful and you should visit.
Cities we visited:
Bergen
Tromso
Bodo
Lofotens
Balestrand (Kviknes Hotel)
Voss (Fleischer's)
Oslo
Favorites:
Tromso (brewery, college town, very far north)
Bodo (aviation museum!)
Bergen (our first city in Norway, touristy but very fun anyway. VERY RAINY!)
Oslo - everything was great-Bygdoy, Wigeland park wonderful
Lofotens - if you are active - rent a bike, hike, find the little beaches - if not, drive around. All beautiful. The Viking homestead was very cool.)
Eating - very pricey. We had fun eating from grocery store deli's and picnicking like it seemed most locals did. Beer and wine were very expensive, too. Price barometers:
McDonalds value meal, $10
Cheap beer in a moderate restaurant, $7
2 loaded baked potatoes and 2 beers, $40
We loved it all. Would love to go back. We bought several guide books before we went - only took 2 with us, but the background reading was worth it. Read KonTiki if you like adventure, then see the KonTiki museum at Bygdoy.
Have fun!
