I will be driving in Ireland in February. I have the normal car insurance required in the US (newYork) but should I get additional insurance for this-and if so do I get it from the rental car co in Ireland or at home? This is new to me-by the way is driving very difficult In Ireland? Thanks Rose

We live in a small town some distance from the nearest American Express office, so prior to our October trip we ordered Italian lira and Swiss francs from AMEX on our card. Both conversions were 95-96% of the commercial rate at the time.
The money arrived by first class mail a few days later. Enclosed was a form to returm any unused currency.
On a transaction of a little more than $600, there was $8 in interest charged, but there was no interest on any other normal transactions on the card.
This might be useful information to other "country folks" who don't have the convenience of large banks, etc.

Rose,

My sister and I are going to the Republic of Ireland this Fri. and we are renting a car. I called my car insurence and I'm only covered to drive in the US. I than called American Express. You know how you can waive the liability and collision from the rental agency if you charge the rental on their card? Well, the Republic of Ireland is one of the six countries they don't do this with. If you are in Northern Ireland it works, but not in the south. You will have to say yes to all of the stuff they offer when you rent the car. I think that is why it's so expensive to rent abroad. I hope this helps.
