2 Nights in Venice - Where to stay? Venice or any other island?

Hello..

We are planning a two night trip to Venice (05/31/2011 - 06/02/2011). We would ideally love to stay in Venice, but cant really find any good hotel options for our budget of 85 or 90 euro/night.

Wanted to know if it is worthwhile staying away from Venice in Lido or some other island - both money wise and comfort wise - considering that we only have 2 nights so hardly 1.5 days to enjoy Venice..

Any suggestions on good budget hotels or apartments in Venice for 85/90 euros a night?

Thanks

Venice is a special destination. If you don't stay in Venice proper, you lose a lot of the experience. So maybe splurge a little there and up your budget for those nights.

Look at www.venere.com. That's a good source for hotels available on your dates. Then crosscheck the hotels at www.tripadvisor.com.

We spent 3 nights here in Venice last year and would highly recommend it as a good budget option: http://www.aitagliapietra.com/

meant to add - if you are going all the way (and spending all that money) to get Venice it really is best to stay IN Venice. Once all the day trippers have gone it is lovely! I really think you would lose out by staying outside of Venice.

It may be worth splurging a bit here and skimping somewhere else...

Dorsoduro area of Venice has some cheaper options and I would re-iterate that you really MUST stay in Venice itself.

On our first trip to Venice (with a tour)we stayed on the Lido - it is not as convenient but depending on the price difference, it could be an acceptable option. Actually the ride across the lagoon from Venice to the Lido is quite scenic, not too long, and connects near San Marcos so easily links to tourist "ground zero". The OP does not have alot of time to locate an inexpensive option in Venice so they may have to look elsewhere. I would think the Lido would be preferable to Mestre altho train connections with the Lido would be more complicated.

Thanks everyone. I'll continue to look in Venice and wait for more budget hotel suggestions.

jamikins - I already contacted http://www.aitagliapietra.com/. they have no availability for these dates.

We have never stayed at a B&B, how is the experience generally? Is it too intrusive? I mean too many people in the house? Or do you generally come across others only during the breakfast?

Thanks

We find you generally only come across people during breakfast. And even then you may not because people eat at different times. Some have a communal table where all the guests sit together. Some have individual tables.

We love B&B's and have met some very interesting people. If you do want to visit with others you can get their take on sights and restaurants and share tips etc. If not, its perfectly acceptable to not join in and talk amongst yourselves (may be a bit awkward at a communal table but its totally up to you whether you join in a group discussion).

Sorry to hear they are full!

While she wrote it for Irish B&Bs, Michele Erdvig at Irelandyes.com has a great thread in her forums on B&B stays and etiquette.

I'll be staying at Santa Margherita Guesthouse in Dorsoduro in October for about 80 euro a night. Check it out.

Hotwire shows a "4 star" (by their standards) hotel in Mestre for $100/night--even with the extra Hotwire fees, it should be well within your budget.
Many Mestre hotels are right by the train station. Trains run several times an hour, take about 15 minutes to get into Venice.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I was able to find a double room with private bath and toilet for 90 euro/night in Venice.

Good, you won't regret it. Especially with such a short visit.

Hi Rs_travel - can you post the link to the room you found? I'm researching for an October trip to Venice and am looking for places around 100 euro/night. Thanks!
