Just wanted to thank everyone again for your advice and suggestions!
Our itinerary was limited by weather but we were able to do a lot in the 1.5 gloriously sunny days that we had:
Arrived Lavaux area at night
** DAY 1
-- Walked to Cully, pleasantly surprised by the locals working in the vineyards greeting us as we passed by
-- Walked around Vevey market and Vieille Ville
-- Cogwheel train to R-d-N, where recent snow carpeted the area so no hiking but great views (aside: the Riviera card now gives a 20% rather than 50% discount for the R-d-N train. This seems to be a new change, as the ticket lady didn't know how to arrange this, so gave us tickets from Glion to R-d-N instead of from Montreux or Caux. Upon attempting to board the train, the ticket collector objected, sending us back down to the ticket lady, who held firm about the original arrangement. In the end, the collector let us on the train and we decided to just focus on enjoying the trip).
-- Walked along the lakefront from Montreux to Chillon with beautiful flowers and views of Lac Léman. Stopped by the Freddie Mercury statue for fun.
-- Spent ~3 hours at Chillon, where the Confrérie du Guillon happened to be having an event with an Alphorn performance. I found the audio/iPod tour content to be just OK, but for 6 CHF it did guide me to areas of the castle I may otherwise have missed. If you are visiting for the first time with clear weather and good knees, I recommend ascending to the castle keep -- my favorite segment! We used our Riviera card for discounted entry.
** DAY 2
-- Stopped by Le Musée Olympique (in Lausanne) en route back to Zurich
All in all a very busy few days but we enjoyed every minute of it! ! The highlight for us was the walk between Montreux to Chillon, and Chillon Castle itself. If R-d-N wasn't our only mountain experience this entire trip, I would have preferred to save it for a warmer day when hiking around the top would be possible. We did see more adventurous folks hiking/downhill skiing, though. And if you go on a similarly sunny wintry day, do no forget sunglasses!
We also missed a fun local event (World Championship of Tracasset in Epesses), but mentioning here now in case of interest to anyone traveling to the region in future. The event recurs every odd year: https://www.facebook.com/Championnat...0754046300453/
