I prefer the Leidseplein area in the southwestern part of the city. It is near many of the museums and the Vondelpark, and is a major public transportation hub. It is not as seedy as the area near the train station. Lots of hotels and restaurants. Also a good location from which to wander the canals. We stayed at the Hotel Hestia, which had helpful staff and decent rates.

Google using google. (the country you are going to). For Holland use google.nl
You will always find a hotel tranlation in English. Something I learned by accident while on business in Italy last year.
My wife and I stayed at the Owl (pronounce the OOL) hotel in Amsterdam, near both the Leidesplein and the Van Gogh Museum. Very nice place in a quiet area.

I've stayed at the American Hotel probably 12 times, Leidseplein, easy walk to muesums, etc. However, my last visit will be my last. Very expensive. Awful small room, 4 rowdy thugs next door. Called management to send security @3:15 a.m. and again at 5:00 a.m. Deeply regret not pitching a fit, rather than being polite and reasonable when voicing my concern the following day. Upon check out, they did comp breakfast at my request. Will NEVER darken that beautiful Deco landmark again. I'm still mad. Have stayed at Dikker and Thies (misspelled), also several small inns. Have intented to stay at Seven Bridges. Have stayed at the Pulitizer, expensive but nice. Also like the Piet Hein. Good value, good location. Small. Friendly.

I too am a fan of Hotel Hestia, I stayed there last year on the recommendation of a Fodors member, and we were very pleased with it, I've also stayed in The Avenue Hotel which is near the central station end, but I wouldnt stay in that area again. We much preferred the Leidseplein area.

I am eating prior words. Will be returning to the American Hotel very soon. I was contacted by their new management in response to a negative post. The manager could not have been nicer, or more accomodating. I have decided to give it a try, particularly since I love the hotel, love the location, and have had many prior pleasant visits. Will "tell all" to Fodor's in a few weeks. If anyone has been to Amsterdam recently and has some great spots they wish to share, you have my thanks in advance.

BKnight,
It sounds like the new management is working hard to make thinks better. I look forward to hearing about your next visit.
By the way, I stayed at Seven Bridges for a week and loved it. I stayed in room #9. The breakfast delivered to my room each morning was huge. The people great.
There is a small Italian restaurant on the corner, Porte Acardi (I think), that was fantastic. Only about 8 tables, one waiter and a cook. I also enjoyed shopping and hanging out on the nearby street, Utrechtsestraat.
Enjoy your visit!
