$2,000 for ten days?

Four of us are planning a ten day trip to Stockholm in August and want to set a price limit of $2,000 per person including air fare from the US. We would like to visit some of the surrounding area, specifically VasterFarnabo since our family emigrated from there in the early 1900's. Would also like to consider visiting one or more of Sweden's or Norway's cities if money permits. My question is whether it is reasonable to expect that we could do this trip at all for $2,000 per person. I know Sweden is an expensive country to visit so this may be a real pipe dream. We will appreciate any opinions. Thank you.

I've never been to Sweden, but in general I would reccommnend considering what the airfare, ground transportation transfers will cost from airport to city and back, mode of transportation during your stay, typical hotel & restaurant costs, any extras for musuems or other exhibits, shopping, etc.

Do a search on this forum for costs in Sweden or do some research on the web to find costs. Then add everything up and take some contingency.

Let's assume air cost of $800pp. $150 per night for a hotel for 2 ... $75 pp. A rental car for at $50 per day would be $12.50 pp. So hotel + car or other means of public transportation would bring you to around $88 which would only leave you ($120 per day - $88) $32 per day for food and any other thing. I subtracted the $800 air fare from $2000 which leaves you $1200 for 10 days or $120 per day. I'm just guessing her to illustrate how you should estimate your costs. Find out what the actual costs will be and fill in the blanks.

I typically allocate at least $50 per day per person for food, but it does depend on personal preferences, country, etc.

Other expenses for gifts and purchases for yourself vary all over the place. Little things do have a way of adding up.

Someone once said, take half the clothes and twice the amount of money you plan. There is aome truth in that adage.
Georgene, haven't been to Sweden, but we found Norway to be the most expensive country we've been to in Europe. Wouldn't have missed it for anything though, and would suggest that you do see some of Norway while you're there. Do as John says, a search, and that will help you greatly. If you are two couples splitting car rental costs, that will help, or 4 singles sharing roooms, that will help too.

Having been to Sweden many times, I think this an OK budget. I must confess I travel on a budget anywhere I go, but this should be fine - plenty for me. Picnic a lot and avoid restaurants for the most part. Eating out is OK on occasion but be selective. Hotels in the summer can be reasonable especially in July - travelers who travel for business purposes is down thus the prices tend to soften up a bit. You should be able to find reasonable prices. Hostel some. The hostels in Scandinavia are great, clean and cozy. Moreover, 4 people together can split some expenses. If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me. Note: Copenhagen is your cheapest entry point in Scandinavia. You may want to look into this and take a night train to Stockholm. Tak!

My husband and I are going to Sweden Aug7-19, booked package through Norvista which includes airfare, 6 nights Scandic hotels and rental car for 7 nights. We are flying direct to Helsinki from San Francisco, cost @ 1300/pp. We are staying additional nights at a smmall hotel in countryside. We will be in Stockholm during Water Festival. Prices from East coast seem a good deal also. Buffet breakfast is included. Let me know if you need more info. (PS...I originally wanted to tour Norway, but it is more expensive)
