1st time visit to Germany

Planning a 1st time visit to Germany in early Sept.2001. Tried to find a village called Kling Meunster (spelling?) was informed it no longer exists. Anyone no of it and where it was - had family from there - family name is Bretz. Interested in self catering cottages. Any suggestions of where to go and what to see would be appreciated.
Virginia,

there is a small town named Klingenmünster in southwestern Germany. It still exists, and they have a homepage:

http://www.klingenmuenster.org/index.htm

Unfortunately, the site is only in German, but they have a map of the area ( click on "Allgemeines" ) and some nice pictures. You can also send them an email to ask for further help. There should be someone who speaks English.

Hope that helps.

Regrads, Jochen

You'll be in Germany when wine festivals along the Rhine and Mosel rivers get into full swing. The Mosel's little wine towns are especially fun to explore at this time. Here's a vintner that offers a "Ferienwohnung" (self-catering apartment.)

www.weingut-andre.de/

Here's another place in Cochem with quite a view of the river and castle:

http://www.hotelwinzer.de/Ferienwohn...enwohnung.html

You'll find a lot of rentals throughout Germany at this website too; it's accessible in English.

www.touristhome.de

Hi! Keep in mind that Germany was substantially larger before the wars, so that the village you're looking for may be located in one of the neighboring countries or even Russia or Lithuania.
Cheers.

Klingenmünster is around 60km southwest of Heidelberg via Landau. So, it is quite some distance away from the Mosel, which Russ is recommending to you. However, it is in the Rheinpfalz wine district and close to some famous wine towns like Bad Dürkheim.

A nice little place to stay listed on the site Jochen gave you is Gastehaus Bohre, $35 a night for a double with breakfast. Their Fax number is 928160 with whatever prefixes are required. No self-catering cottages are mentioned for this town.

However, at Bad Duerkheim there are some. Try the English version of the site <www.bad-duerkheim.de>.

Hello, Virginia. I assumed you might be looking for somewhere besides Klingenmünster to spend whatever additional time you might have -- hence, my suggestion for the Mosel.
The site Jochen mentions does contain some self-catering vacation rentals at the following page -- just look under "Ferienwohnungen". Three of them seem to have website links. The page is in German, however.

www.klingenmuenster.org/unterkunft.htm

The region around Klingenmünster itself might be a good place to take in some wine festivals as well. Here's a list.

http://www.klingenmuenster.org/wein.htm

Also, here's a page of festivals on the Mosel near Cochem. It's for the year 2000, but generally, these towns will put on these fests at nearly the same time every year.

http://www.mosel-reisefuehrer.de/aaV...nstMoWein.html
