1st time to Amsterdam

I am going to Amsterdam for the first time in a few days. Any recommendations?

Even though it's "touristy" take a canal tour. Take the hop on and off one. Gives a good overall view of the city and a nice way to see the city. We met a woman there who takes a night canal cruise a couple times a year just for the view! Go to an Indonesian Restaurant and have Ristaffel... Rice Table. Go Hungry!

Don't miss the Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh museum, or the Red Light District. We also liked trying an Indonesian rice table. Heineken tastes way better there than it does here too!

Anna, is it worthwhile to take the tour of the Heinekin brewery - or should you just have one, or two, there and skip the tour?

A small musuem you might enjoy is the Kat Kabinet on Singel. It is housed in a charming canal mansion and has a collection of art work all with the subject of cats. There are two or three resident cats. One web site you might like is channels./nl It will take you on a virtual tour of the city and link you to restaraunts, museums, clubs, attractions, shopping. A good lunch restaraunt is the Kalvertoren on top of the Kalvertoren shopping complex. Metz & Co. dept. store also has a good lunch restaraunt. Both of these have great rooftop views of the city. The channels site will direct you to these places and other attractions. I'm sure you'll discover lots of fun things to do!

We contemplated doing the brewery tour, but didn't due to our limited time in Amsterdam. We toured a brewery in Brugge though, it was ok. I guess the best part was the beer at the end.

Thank you for all the good tips -especially the Kat Kabinet - we both love cats!

Beth:
FYI the Heineken Brewery was closed for renovations in December and is scheduled to re-open May 30 or so.
