Well, I'm pretty sure we will do both. After CT, plan on 4 days in Florence. This is where I'm stuck before we end with 4 days in Rome. Should we take day trips from Florence to Siena and SanGimignano, or stay in Siena two nights and goto SanG one day. Or- was thinking maybe day trip to Siena, then stay maybe overnight at Orvieto with train to Rome? Or are we alotting too much time in Florence, and need more in Siena/SanG/Orvieto...or more in Rome? Kinda stuck.

Me again. I'm sure I will be struck down hard here, but I gotta say.... not a fan of Florence, especially in the heat of the summer. There is virtually no green space in the tourist center, no green to absord all of the heat and Vespa exhaust and it doesn't cool down a great deal at night. Those Vespas are everywhere! and so loud! Go there, but maybe not for 4 days. Add Siena. San G. is historic, and nice, but is easily accessible by train from Siena so is Florence ( and withing the walls of Siena, no traffic!!, no Vespas!). In fact on my next trip, I'm staying in Siena and day tripping to Florence, not the other way around. Siena can be extremely hot as well, but is less crowded than Florence and just incredibly unique.

Betsy, you won't be struck down by me. While I liked Florence when I was there in 1987, I didn't find it nearly as wonderful as Venice & Rome. It was, by far, the noisiest city during our trip of three weeks and Rome, which I finally visited for the first time last year, actually seemed quieter than I remembered Florence being.

Sandie, I was in CT (Vernazza) and Siena (as a daytrip from Florence) on that 1987 trip, and I loved both places. On our upcoming trip we're going to be spending time in both places; that's what I'd recommend; and it sounds like you've decided to do that too.

Sandie, Keep it simple--you are getting tied up in your shorts. You have 16 days and you know where you arrive and depart. I would think in terms of 5 destinations. Perhaps like this:
Venice--3 nites
Train to Florence--2 nites
Get car--to Cinque Terre--3 nites
To Tuscany base--4 nites[ near Siena]
Drop car in Orvieto--train to Rome

That is a good start--you can tweek from there. That time will be busy in those places. Hope this helps.
