Without knowing why you are going, what you want to see/do and what time of year you are going it's hard to provide specific advice.

Also who/how many is "we"?

Are you planning on travel by train? By car? Both?

Have you been to Rome before? If no - 1 day there (2 nights) is really a waste of time IMHO.

Good morning ,my wife and i are going to Italy July 2017.
We plan to go for 17 days [give or take a few] We plan to land in rome and stay a couple nights and then drive to Tuscany [I think we'll stay around 6-7 days then we would love to see where my Mom grew up in Avellino, then to the amalfi coast for 4-5 days then head back to Rome. is this a decent plan? any tips on dealing with a car? I've heard no cars in Amalfi coast
Thank you
Anthony and Wendy

You might consider flying home from Naples. Rome is wonderful and you should consider staying a little longer there. You are correct...you will not want a car on the AC.

In Avellino is not much to see, if you go for the first time to Rome, you need at least 7 days and for the Amalfitan coast too! In the you can't go out in july, it's too hot to do anything, 40 degrees is normal in july! If you have no car in the amalfitan coast I raccomand you Vietri sul Mare because from there you can take the bus into the coast, go to Salerno (5km) take the boat into the coast, take the bus or train to Pompeii and Naples, it is the most central town of the amalfitan coast!
