I also think that seeing a bit of Sicily is fine -- it would take you two weeks or more to get a real sense of the island -- but when I re-read all the information you've gotten, I'm most tempted to suggest that you not fly to Sicily for a few days make the area of Napoli, the Sorrento peninsula, the Amalfi coast and Salerno and Paestum the third leg of your trip (Venezia and Roma being the other legs).

The area will really repay you, especially if you do some deeper reading (the internet is great for this) and dig deeper into the historic treasures, places like Cumae, Castellmare di Stabia, camaldoli, and Pozzouli. Herculaneum and Pompeii are vast sites.

For that time of year, I would keep the car and make excursions along the Amalfi coast in fine, clear weather. You won't mind if some tourist shops are shut.

If you do decide to go to Toscana, you might enjoy some of the more unusual Etruscan and Tufa towns -- like Pitigliano and Orvieto, as well as Siena.

Unfortunately, only the major museum cities -- like Firenze and Rome and to some extent Napoli, offer much to do after it is dark.

Thanks Zeppole. I will dig more as you recommend. It would be wonderful to discover ancient sites that are different from those on the usual list. Luckily I think I have time to learn more and let it sink in before making a final determination. The one decision I need to make pretty soon though is how many nights to spend in Rome. I have located what looks to be a wonderful apartment in the Travestere area that is available for either 3 nights - or 4. I originally thought 4 nights, but am now considering spending the morning of the fourth day there and moving in the afternoon to the Naples/AC area. Decisions, decisions.

I read some of your plans and the comments. Since you are departing Italy from Venice the hotel I suggested would be ideal for location. As I noted at the other location the rooms are quite small but comfortable. It is the Hotel Campiello ( www.hcampiello.it). I have never dropped a car at the Venice train station but have picked up and dropped cars at the airport and taken the Vaporetto to Venice. It is an easy arrangement. However, the train station is closer.
since you enjoy architecture etc. Do sometime try Sicily. the remnants of Greek Civilization on the island are great. Agrigento, siracusa and Taromina among others are worth the trip.
I envy your time. My wife is a professor and can only get time off coinciding with my time during summer. We will be in Italy with a quick trip to Barcelona from August 2-28. Not my favorite time!!When we visited Sicily for the first time it was late March. Weather was great!

Thanks Jed. I will check out the hotel. I suppose the car rental folks can tell me where I can drop the car in Venice. Sicily in March sounds wonderful. Its so funny that I have looked forward to traveling to Italy for so long - and now, not having yet been even once, I am already dreaming of subsequent trips!
