16 Day Honeymoon, Help!!! Italy.

My fiancé and I can't decide, we are very indecisive, and we want to do everything, but we know we need to limit it.

I've been to Rome, Venice, Tuscany, and Florence. She's never been anywhere in Europe.

We want the perfect balance of sightseeing, and relaxing...as it is a Honeymoon.

We have about 16 days. I need help, as I keep going back and forth.

I want to take her to Rome, Venice, Amalfi Coast....what would be a good itinerary for this...and can I add in Cinqe Terre or Florence, or too much for one or both?

hi bjchin,

well, first of all congrats on your impending wedding. I hope that you will be very happy, including on your honeymoon, which is why I'm going to eco what you've said - you can't have it all.

in fact, you don't seem indecisive to me at all - you have come up with what you know in your heart of hearts is a very good plan ie Rome, Venice and the Amalfi - perfect for a 16 day trip.

I suggest flying into Venice [who could resist that first sight of Venice from the air and then the sea?], train to the Amalfi, [it will probably take most of a day to get there] and ending in Rome. you will have plenty of time to relax, take day trips, sight-see, and you will return home happy and refreshed.

Please, please resist the temptation to add other destinations - you will end up rushing everywhere, and not have time to anywhere properly. You have the whole of the rest of your lives to see florence and the CT - which would make a great focus for another trip.

good luck!

I suggest you skip Cinque Terre in favor of the Amalfi Coast--they offer similar experiences, but the Amalfi Coast also puts you near Pompeii if you are interested in history and excavations. Below is a suggested itinerary, though you could juggle the number of days in Venice and Florence based on your interests--for example, more days in Florence if you want to daytrip to Tuscan villages.

Day 1: arrive Venice
Day 2: Venice
Day 3: Venice
Day 4: Venice
Day 5: train to Florence
Day 6: Florence
Day 7: Florence
Day 8: travel to Amalfi Coast
Day 9: Amalfi Coast
Day 10: Amalfi Coast
Day 11: Amalfi Coast
Day 12: travel to Rome
Day 13: Rome
Day 13: Rome
Day 14: Rome
Day 15: Rome
Day 16: fly home

When is this trip? Comments may vary depending on the time of year. For example, the AC is beautiful and the scenery gorgeous, but in high season it's not particularly relaxing IMO. Ditto the CT.

Hi BJ,

Your fiance is a lucky lady. She will have a private tour guide.

For a honeymoon, I would fly into Venice - 5 nights; train to Florence - 5 nights; train to Rome.

From Florence take 1 daytrip to Siena and on another day take the bus up to Fiesole.

Visit Orvieto either from Florence or Rome.

From Rome see the ruins at Ostia Antica.

Enjoy your visit.

I hesitate to disagree with Ira, but on this occasion I feel myself compelled to say that 5 days in each of Venice, florence and Rome does not strike me as a very restful honeymoon! one of the things about Italy that has struck my again and again is how tiring touring cities is, and easy it is to become confused about what you saw where.

unless you are art history buffs, very soon you won't care if the Tintorettos were in Venice or the Titians in Florence - they will simply be a great mish mash of art in your heads. However, if you add the Amalfi [or some other area that is not primarily an artistic centre] you will give yourselves time to recharge your batteries before Rome - where you will need every bit of your energy and enthusiasm to make the most of that stupendous city.

my only caveat to this - it depends on when you are travelling. the amalfi would not necessarily be a place to visit in November!
