14 days Spain and Portugal
Hello Folks,
Its always great to come back here and see this forum buzzing with trip ideas!!
Will be traveling with my wife and just turned teen son to Spain in mid May this year. We will be landing (and going back from) in Barcelona and will proceed from there (if time permits, Portugal too). Can take a low cost airline to travel far away places. Can hire a car where driving is feasible.
Will appreciate any suggestions or a possible itinerary form you guys. Thanks in advance for your time and assistance.

To continue my earlier post, i have few things which needs to be corrected.
So Day 1 we land in Barcelona in the afternoon and can proceed o Lisbon (fly)
Day 2 & 3 in Lisbon
Day 4 Porto
Day 5 Porto to Lisbon and then Seville
Day 6 Seville (hire car)
Once in Spain we will have 9 days to cover.
So road trip starts from Seville, Ronda, Gibralter, Marbella/Malaga, Granada, Cordoba, Toledo, Valencia and finally Barcelona.
The above program is just what i think but maybe completely impractical. Firstly, I need to know about our short trip to Portugal. Then once in Seville, is a road trip doable from there ? Can Seville be made the base initially and then do day trips to nearby places ? Next base destination before and finally going to Barcelona ?. Want to spend few days there too before heading for home.
Please excuse my little knowledge about the place and correct me so that a doable and practical trip can be made. I know Spain has lots to offer and 9 days is a short time.
Once again appreciate your time and any valuable suggestions.
Regards,
Nashh

Thanks for the reply. But we wish to cover both Spain and Portugal in our given 14 days. Yeah there are lots of places in both countries, guess we need to pic and choose the best.

I would skip Marbella in Andalucia - it is just a resort town. Much better to spend more time in beautiful Malaga, where are so many interesting sights to enjoy (Malaga Cathedral, the Alcazaba, Castello de Gibralfaro, vibrant market, Picasso Museum, and much more). You obviously have limited time, but there are places not to miss in Andalucia: the Alhambra in Granada (prebook your tickets!), Cordoba Mezquita... Seville requires at least two full days (we had four), Ronda for the view of El Tajo Gorge (be ready for insane crowds in Ronda!)
in Portugal, I would not stay overnight in rundown Coimbra and just stop over to visit one of the oldest universities in Europe, Coimbra University, with its stunning architecture and sweeping views from the top of the hill.
I would do day trips to Evora and Sintra from Lisbon. If you need to park your car, then you might want to base in Cascais and do day trips to Lisbon, Belem, which is part of Lisbon, Sintra (do not drive to and in Sintra!), and Evora, if time permits.
On the way from Porto to Lisbon, I would include gorgeous monasteries of Batalha and Alcobaça. Cannot comment on Nazare - we decided to skip it.
My own and very biased opinion: Portugal is beautiful, but Spain in general and Andalucia in particular are STUNNING. We have been to Spain four times, with three trips to Andalucia, and are seriously looking forward for more to come.

So starting from Portugal what if we make Lisbon the base and then do Evora, Sintra and Belem as day trips. So is 4 days enough for all these places ? What if I skip Porto and surrounding places to save time for Spain? (Dont know when i'll be in this lovely region, so just wanted to tick both, but open to all ideas!)
As for Spain, I am still in the lookout for places starting from Seville. Will omit Marbella as suggested by you. I have to ultimately head to Barcelona for home bound flight.
Thanks a lot for the inputs and your time.
Regards.

You can easily do a day trip to Cordoba and Ronda from Seville, but if you have time, do try to stay overnight in both and enjoy these towns after crazy crowds leave in their huge tourist buses😊.
We haven’t been to Valencia yet, but are planning to visit in the future.
Toledo is fabulous, but I am afraid you would not have any time left for it. If you go to Madrid at some point, Toledo, Segovia, Avila, Salamanca and El Escorial are easy to reach on a train from Madrid - all of them have unique and captivating sights to enjoy.

Valencia is not to be missed.
I, too, would skip Toledo. It's very worthwhile but with your limited time you'll have to make choices.
Gibraltar? Really don't see why anyone would want to go there.
This would be my itinerary: Sevilla (2 nt), visit Ronda on the way to Málaga (1 nt), Granada (2 nt), Córdoba (2 nt), Valencia (1 nt), Barcelona.

Have you made your airline reservations? If not, I suggest flying into Lisbon and out of Barcelona so that you don't have to waste time and money backtracking.
However, with only 14 days, I recommend omitting Portugal from this trip, or visiting Portugal and Andalucia, and omit Barcelona. If you have made your airline reservations in and out of Barcelona, then I suggest dropping Portugal and plan on visiting Portugal as a separate trip. Right now you say you have 9 days for Spain, and you list 9 places you want to visit. That's just not possible.
If you insist on visiting Spain and Portugal, and you have made your airline reservations in and out of Barcelona, I suggest you visit the following places in Spain: Barcelona and the highlights of Andalucia, which are Seville, Cordoba, and Granada. That's still a lot of places for 9 days.
OR visit only Lisbon in Portugal, and then fly from Lisbon to Seville and spend more time in Spain.
How many days to spend in Lisbon? We spent 5 nights in Lisbon, and that included a day trip to Sintra, and we didn't see everything in Lisbon. I recommend a minimum of 3 nights in Lisbon. But 4 or 5 nights would be better.
Make sure you purchase your Alhambra tickets as soon as they go on sale.

What i I normally do, since we usually charter minibuses, I put all the places in google maps just to see how long it takes between all of the ones I’m considering. Once you do that , you then start adding the actual time it would take at each place, plus lunches, dinners etc. at this time, I often see how ambitious my plan is and that i really need to be ruthless and cut it down a lot. For example, I try to keep things and places that are unique. For example, you won’t see anywhere else anything like Alhambra or Ronda with its amaing setting or Gaudi’s creations. But cathedrals and churches might start all look quite similar after a few. So try to pick things and places that give you variety.

Do I understand correctly that you already have your airline tickets into and out of Barcelona? If so, then I would encourage you to do some research before committing to any particular itinerary. Two weeks is very, very little – IMO, not even enough for Portugal! A first visit to Barcelona can easily take 4 to 6 full days, not counting any day trips. To respond to just a few of your other comments / questions:
Why rent a car in Seville? You don’t need one for the places you mention – and a car might actually be a hindrance in many of those locations. And while I won’t say that you can’t visit all those places in the time you have, I seriously doubt that you could do so in a way that would make sense. Don’t you want to actually see any of those places? IMO, a reasonable itinerary just for Andalusia takes at least 9 days – 4 for Sevilla, 3 for Granada, and 2 for Cordoba; more if you want to add anything else.
I must admit that I think you would benefit greatly from consulting a good guidebook or two.
Good luck!

Thank you very much folks for the reply.
Yes my airline reservations have been made ie in and out from Barcelona. You guys surely make sense that 14 days is a very short time to cover both countries. But as mentioned earlier i don't see myself coming back here again (would love to but may not be feasible). So just thought might as well pick the of Portugal and Spain.
So once after landing in Barcelona, have kept options open. Either I fly straight away to Lisbon. Make Lisbon the base for 4 days and do Evora, Sintra, Belem etc as suggested by Vinonobile. Then head to Seville and do the places around before finally getting back to Barcelona.
Car hire, yes Kja, that was in my mind. Went around Scotland and thoroughly enjoyed it. Last year rented in Nice to go around (as there was a train strike in France), it was crazy traffic out there, but Eze Village and Monaco was fine. I thought parts of Spain is all about road trip. If Seville, Cordoba, Granada etc are not places to drive around then will surely skip. Valencia is also in my bucket list, intend to do after Seville (and places around) and then finally head back to Barcelona.
Once again thank you very much, sincerely appreciate your suggestions and time .

Nashh

Ditto kja's sentiments. If one thinks they will never return to a place . . . does it make sense to dash around like crazy and not actually SEE any of the places you dream of. The more one moves around the less they actually see/do because they spend more time in transit/checking in/checking out/in transit again/repeat. Wouldn't it be better to have lovely memories of fewer places than a rushed blur of many places.
And . . . driving to/in the cities mentioned is a lot (really a LOT) different than driving around rural Scotland.

We always drive in Spain, but not in big cities. Driving in Andalucia is one of the most memorable things of our trips... we stoped at the places not discovered by mass tourism yet and enjoyed them so much. The road from Ronda to Malaga is stunningly gorgeous as well as the road from Malaga to lovely Antequera. Just a couple of examples.
I agree with Myriam - if you want to drive, just do it😊.
And if you want to combine Portugal and Spain, it is OK too. We had done it, but it was our third trip to Spain and the fourth one has happened in the same year (in 2017).

True! And there's no need to drive IN the cities. Park your car in a parking garage and use your feet. Many hotels in Sevilla, Granada and Córdoba have agreements with a parking garage nearby (if they haven't a garage themselves) to limit the parking costs. In Ronda there is plenty of street parking.
