14 days in United Kingdom

I have read some great posts on this board. My wife and I are heading to London in early June and plan on staying in the UK for about 14 days. How would you suggest I divide up that time between England and Scotland? Should we fly or take the train to Scotland?

mpprh was unnecessarily harsh -- you'd already eliminated Wales, after all! But you do need to do a bit of research and narrow down the options yourself first.

Take the train to Edinburgh, there's a fast one that will get you there as quickly as flying (after you factor in all the airport lead times and hassles) and you'll get to enjoy the countryside on the way.

While you're based in London, you can take day trips to castles such as Warwick. Be forewarned: Leeds "Castle" is actually a great house with lovely gardens, much admired, but not really a castle.

As for history, it will be all around you and inevitable!

Do you want to spend all your time in the cities, or stay in the coutryside? How do you feel about driving -- this is a little scary because of the opposite-side business, but gives you lots of freedom.

Dave
Obviously, it make a difference on whether you have been to the UK before and what types of things you like. With 14 days you have a lot of choices. Here's one possibility. You could easily spend at a week or more in London. There is so much to see and do there. In addition, there are many one day trips offered and available from London to the English countryside, stonehenge, etc. After London, (assuming you want to go to Scotland) you could take the train to York. Spend a day or two there and then take the train to Edinburgh for the balance of your trip. Other possibilities after London could be a tour of Wales (lots of castles there), a week in the Cotswolds, or the Lake Country. As I said it all depends on what you like and how you want to spend your time.

Thank you all for your replies. I have booked our tickets and look forward to our visit. I will check out the B&Bs. My wife and I like staying at these as we find this a great way to meet people and really find out what is going on. We have done this on trips to Germany, Austria and Austrilia

One other quick suggestion: If you're a fan of castles, why not book a night to *stay* in one?

Try this site:
http://www.celticcastles.com/

They vary in price greatly, some are really more "manors" than "castles," and some are only available for large parties, but there might be something there you like.
