Question re. Scotland itinerary

Hi, Our family will be traveling to Scotland in August. Would you recommend going from Edinburgh to Inverness and staying there 2 nights before heading to Skye (2 nights) OR going from Edinburgh to Glencoe (1 night) and then onto Skye (3 nights)? Thank you

We were there at the beginning of July last year and we were in Edinburgh for 3 nights, then drove through Glencoe and stayed in Glenfinnan on Loch Shiel overnight; then on to Skye for 3 nights and then another 2 nights at Gleneagles Hotel. That worked well for us, so I would recommend the Edinburgh -Glencoe - Skye route.

Thank you. Where did you stay in Glenfinnan?

I personally would not stay in Glenfinnan. It is a beautiful area of course. But you can drive through it, visit the monument, see the viaduct, etc in about an hour on the way to or from Skye. Since you have so little time free I'd lean towards your option 2. One night in Glencoe, visit Glenfinnan en route to the Mallaig ferry, 3 nights on Skye, leave via the bridge and back to Edinburgh (or you could do it the opposite -- Bridge to Skye, three nights, ferry off the Isle, see Glenfinnan, night in Glencoe and back to Edinburgh.

Oh - absolutely! I assumed you already have accommodation in Edinburgh. If not, get on it NOW and prepare for sticker shock. AND book tickets for the Tattoo now, AND find lodging on Skye ASAP. There is relatively a limited amount of accommodations on Skye and in summer there are more people who want to visit than rooms available. Same to a lesser extent in Glencoe.

Also -- how many in your family? Family rooms are more limited than doubles/twins so booking pretty far ahead on Skye is essential. Maybe try nailing down your rooms now and if nothing is available for your dates, you might need to go back to the drawing board and devise a different plan all together.
