Oh StCirq, you reminded me of lovely meals in Rome with the waitstaff making a fuss over my little guy! The Italians really do love babies. We only traveled to Paris with a little one and they seemed pretty happy to see him. Is that attitude common outside of Paris as well?
ucsun -- I hope you didn't interpret my reply to be questioning your parenting! I love traveling with my son, even more so now that he can carry his own luggage. But even as a small child, he opened us up to experiences we never would have had on our own.

BKP - not at all. There were other comments that were unnecessary earlier in the thread.
I'm sure this trip will not be the lazy, relaxed trip of yore, but she'll have a ton of stimulation with new sites, sounds, and tastes.
The wife does like Italy, but she's fixated on going to Nice. I was thinking Nice/Genoa could work...except for a long train ride. Maybe the Italian Riviera/cities might do the trick!

You know BigRuss, in this day and age, it's actually ok to use the term breast feeding.
The baby can potter up and down the aisles on a train without coming to much harm. Although if she's crawling, the train floors are probably pretty filthy.
The seats also have a table between them so you can put out some toys, snacks etc for your daughter.
Only one word of warning from me, we took our son on a beach holiday when he was 10 months old and all he wanted to was crawl into the water, over and over and over again! Drove us nuts after about 30 seconds.

our little ones were warmly received pretty much everywhere we went in France
We had the same experience in both England and Spain. In London our boy was a rock star at the restaurants where we ate dinner - from waiters plying him with cookies and making faces to try to crack him up, to a waitress who randomly chucked him under the chin and made a friend for life.
