10 days in protugal, mixed age group 10-70

We will be in portugal in late June for 10 days with a motley crew ranging from a 10 yr old to a 70 yr old.
We are already booked to fly in and out of Lisbon so a bit stuck there.
My thought was to land in Lisbon and head straight to Porto by train since there will be different degrees of tiredness that day and we can collapse in porto.
Then rent car in porto and spend 3 days there- What can we do there for 4 days and will we need the car.
Then drive down to Lisbon over a period of 2-3 days stopping in between,
Last 4 days in Lisbon with day trips to Sintra, Evora. Do we need car for these 4 days?

Thank you for suggestions and must see places that I am not aware of.

Let me see: you're going to land in Lisbon and then your first thing is to travel 300km over 3 hours? And then after 3 days you travel again over 300km for 3 days...

Why don't stay in Lisbon first and then travel to Porto the other way around? It seems more logical (for me of course).

Anyway, regarding car, it depends on your interests, you can use easily public transports around the two metropolitan areas, but obviously there are time limits.

Sintra and Lisbon are directly connected by train, and Évora and Lisbon have intercities train connection.
With car you own travel time and basically you can go anywhere you want at any time.

Must see places - again, your interests are? Beach, history, bird watching...?

Since you put it that way- does sound bit crazy. just the idea of booking places to stay in Lisbon twice - after landing and before leaving sounded a lot.
Interests- food, sites, history and some beach.
Would you think that doing the algarve area is complicated with our flight in and out of lisbon.
Thank You

You need to consider what's practical with the time you have, not including your travel dates. Adding the Algave for a beach day would not be practical.

I would vote for getting the misery over and heading for Porto on arrival. You will have to stay at least one night in Lisbon at the end of the trip, and I would prefer to put all the Lisbon time together.

It's not clear how many days you have on the ground. With only ten days max I woulldn't bother with a car. I'd take the train from Porto to Coimbra and then on to Lisbon. Day trips by public transpirt for the rest.
