10 day Italy: help with Tuscany
Hey Everyone,
I'm finalizing a 10 day trip May 25-June 5th, Staying in Venice 3 nights, train to florence where I'll stay in Tuscany for 3 nights, possible flight to naples, where I'll conclude with 4 nights in Positano, flying NAP to JFK.
I realize I'm all over the map, but I really want to see all three sites.
Not to insult Venice, but its my least favorite of the three cities: My question is, should I stay in Tuscany 3 nights, Positano 4 or stay in Tuscany 4, Positano 3?
On my honeymoon I spent the afternoon in Capri on a tour, spent an add'l day in Positano for lunch, gelato in Almafi and a quick run to Ravello. Since I have NEVER seen Tuscany at all, should I add a night there? If so, what 4/5 star hotel should I book (400-700 euro per night) as a base for my travels in Tuscany?
And if I may, what towns should I see during my three full days?
Thanks in advance,
Natalie

I would suggest training to Florence staying one night and renting a car and visiting Siena.Stay overnight as it is great in the evening.Other hill towns in the area also make good overnight stops.I feel that by daytripping into places you might as well be a bus tourist.By staying overnight you get a feel for the place.best regards.By the way I love Venice.

I also liked Venice and wish you a nice visit there. In my opinion you can't stay too long in Tuscany. I would stay in Florence for two nights minimum, but it looks like you want the hill towns, so I would recommend Cortona, just got back in November (I would recommend Hotel Albergo San Luca in Cortona, make sure you get a room with a view), also a nice town is San Gimignano (In San Gimignano we stayed in a lovely farmhouse guesthouse, CASANOVA DI PESCILLE, www.casanovadipescille.com) . I also stronly recommend staying overnight in those towns, rather than just visiting for the day. I rented a car in 2004 for three days out of Florence. I would recommend getting your car from the Florence airport, and not have to drive from the inner city to the outskirts and visa versa. (Airports are always easier cuz there outside the city) Last October I took the train from Rome to Cortona then on to Florence. Highly efficient. You might want to cut your Positano stay to 2 night. I also loved Positano but there is a lot to soak up in Tuscany. You need to of course see "Under the Tuscan Sun". Good luck.

OK, I'm going to be different and recommend you stay in Florence for your time in Tuscany rather than keep moving hotels. If you want to, you can rent a car for a day and tour Siena or other hill towns.
I haven't visited Positano so, unfotunately, can't help with how many nights to spend there.

I'd add an extra day to Tuscany. Will you be renting a car there? It's really the best way to see the countryside. Maybe stay in (or just outide) Siena. That would be convenient for returning the car at the Florence airport and flying south.
