10 Day in Northern Portugal
Hello - I am planning a trip to Portugal at the end of February/March of 2022 for my husband's 50th birthday. We are foodies (everything from Michelin star restaurants to speakeasy small family restaurants), very active (like to explore by foot), and enjoy both quiet, romantic settings and an occasional night out people watching and dancing. Here is my current itinerary - I welcome all feedback and suggestions.
10 Day Trip
Lisbon - Stay first 3 nights
Rent car and drive north
Sintra - Stay 1 night
Nazare - Stay 1 night (visit Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Alcobaca on way to Nazare)
Porto - Stay 2 nights (Stop at Coimbra on way to Porto)
Duoro Valley - Stay 2 nights
Return to Lisbon for final night
Does this look like the best itinerary for romantic foodies? What would you change? Should I plan for a stop on the way back from Duoro Valley to Lisbon and break up that drive with an overnight stay? If so, which current overnight would you eliminate? Any and all suggestions welcomed. Thanks very much.

Hi
One of my favourite things about Portugal is the food.
I find that the best seafood restaurants are by the coast while the best meat restaurants are in the interior, and the further north the more substantial the food ( heavier).
I prefer mom and pop type restaurants, while they usually have less sophistication I find the food to be more to my liking.
Lisbon has all types of cuisine from all over the country.
Some of my favourites:
- peixe espada grelhado - white grilled scabbard fish, long fish that is cut in slices, it has a delicate taste with a substantial spine in the middle.
- chocos grelhados com tinta - grilled cuttlefish with ink. It is an acquired taste, similar to squid but thicker, the ink gives it a different flavour. The ink also make your mouth black, can order without the ink.
- conquilhas - a type of clam, my favourite are from this place https://eduardodasconquilhas.pt/
- carne de porco a alentejana - pork meat with clams. Pieces of fried pork with cubed fries and clams served in a oily sauce. I always have it with Vinho Verde ( green wine) to cut the grease.
- cozido a portuguesa - portuguese boil - very heavy dish of different boiled meats cabbage and potatos.
Nazare
- caldeirada de peixe - fish stew, exactly what the name implies
- espetade de tamboril - monkfish kabob. Monkfish is the poor man lobster, if avalable is a great dish.
Coimbra ( just north is an area called Bairrada)
- leitao da Bairrada - piglet cooked Bairrada style - piglet slowly roasted in a spit, delicious
- chanfana de cabrito - goat cooked in red wine - the only way I find goat delicious
Aveiro ( coastal town between Coimbra and Porto - some called it the Venice of Portugal)
- ovos moles - soft eggs. Sweet made of the yolk of eggs. I buy it in the miniature wooden barrels to have souvenir.

Porto
- tripas a moda do Porto - tripe Porto style. Tripe cooked with white beans - a very acquired taste.
- favas - fava beans - fava beans cooked with pieces of portuguese sausage and pieces of bacon in a tomato sauce. It can be a vegetarian dish by asking that the fava beans not be cooked with meat.
These are some of my favourites, but there are many more. Enjoy.
Bom apetite. Saude
Happy travels

Given the limited time, I would not use Nazaré as an overnight stop but a town inland. The distances as the crow flies are not great, but the roads twist and wind and take up a lot of time. I think that Batalha would make more sense:
