The main road (Hauptbahnstrasse) from the main train station is choc full of wonderful shops, chocolate, food, jewelry (think beautiful Swiss watches) and leather goods. If you walk the length of this, you'll come to the Lake, very beautiful. You might even have time for a short lake cruise. Also, type in Zurich in the topics box and all sorts of threads will come up to help you with ideas. As for a tram or bus day pass, check at the main train station--there may be day passes for the trams, but I'm not sure of this. There is, or used to be, a folk art shop near the cathederal that sells handmade Swiss goods.

As Ally75 says, the Bahnhofstrasse is Zurich's (expensive) shopping paradise. Don't miss a walk through the Niederdorf (on the other side of Limmat river) too. In the main railway station (Zürich HB), the "Christkindlimarkt" might be a point of interest. Visit www.zurichtourism for more ideas.

There's a wide range of tickets available. If you intend to visit some museums and/or to make a short trip to the Uetliberg mountain (30 min by train, half-hourly, great views of the city and Lake Zurich), the ZürichCard is the best option for you. It costs CHF 15.- for adults and CHF 10.- for children and offers unlimited transport in the city and around (tram, bus, train to the airport, train to Uetliberg) as well as free entry to many museums.

If you just want to use trams and buses within the city centre, a 24-hours-card for CHF 7.20 (adults) or CHF 5.20 (CHF) will serve you best.

Just so you know, you can walk from the Bahnhof (train station) down Hauptbahnstrasse, across the river, and up the Niederdorf very easily in one day, without using any transportation other than your feet.
This area is quite compact and walkable, and enjoyable!

thank you Wendy and Mathias--the Kunsthaus and Niederdorf were the names I was searching for and couldn't come up with! I had a wonderful time at the Kunsthaus.
