train or bus - seward to anchorage
Hello, We are sailing on RCI and arrive in Seward on Friday July 6th at 7:00am. Our flight leaves from Anchorage at midnight. I have been told the train ride is great and you see glaciers etc. But it does not leave until 6:00pm. I have also heard there is nothing to do in Seward. Should we take an earlier bus? What would you recommend doing given that we have luggage etc. to enjoy our last day of vacation. thanks Wilma

We spent two days in Seward prior to our Alaska cruise and I loved it. The Kenai Fjord trip is fabulous (especially if you haven't seen any orcas yet) and the SeaLife Center is very neat. We actually rented a car and drove ourselves (I believe it is Hertz that has an office in both places). That might give you some flexibility. But it might also be too tempting to stop along the way. Although that's another option too. It took us all day to drive from Anchorage to Seward because of all of our stops.

Kenai fjords is an excellent tour to consider, but orcas are in no way common to see, probably 10% of the trips.
However, I do not recommend the train to Anchorage, you are cutting your time too close. By time you get to the airport, it will be close to 11pm. You are best with 2 hours at this airport, expecially cruise ship days, it is extremely crowded and slow moving.
As a suggestion, I would get a one way Hertz car rental. Although costly, makes the BEST use of your time. I would not be wasting my time on a bus with too much down time and a fixed schedule, with most of the time doing nothing. Perhaps see if a car is available? If not then a bus is probably your only option, if you want some time in Seward.
I definatly disagree on nothing to do in Seward. It's a loaded touring area with enough to fill several days if you wish.

We must have been very lucky then on the day we went to Kenai Fjords. We saw a whole pod of orcas (including several that were right next to the boat). We also saw a couple of humpbacks and Dall's Porpoise. I got a picture of the porpoise, which I guess is very difficult to do since they are so fast moving. We saw sea lions, otters, puffins, etc. Plus a calving glacier. And this was all in our second full day in Alaska
! Just wandering around Seward was fun also.
